AGENTS of CHANGE and The Reality of Cynicism

Just today, I had someone (not on Rethos!) comment on the “credibility” or “institutional backing” for my personal efforts to introduce the new Symbol of Sustainability to the world.

I was shocked.

I thought to myself – “this is one of the reasons we’re heading toward a bad place in the world” – “People’s first reaction is scepticism and at worst cynicism”

Unless something or someone is ‘BRANDED’ and endorsed by media or existing industrial / political institutions, we are suspicious of the motivation. We are jealous of the public regard. We pull away human kindness and support of personal creative efforts.

We somehow believe that our support of these unknown agents of change “takes” something from us, instead of the TRUTH, which is that they are actually “gifting” us with their energy, focus and passion to provoke change.

Many people (and Rethosarians) around the world are investing their energy and efforts to address the complaints of the majority, but sadly remain unsupported by the very people they are passionately wanting to help.

The majority of people seem to have lots of time to criticise, and complain about the sad state of the world, but when unsupported agents of change come into their lives and communities, the first reaction is “who are you, who is really behind you, and what EXACTLY are you are doing?”

Change happens organically.

How can we know EXACTLY what we’re doing? – or even what influence we are having? We need the KIND, POSITIVE feedback of moral supporters on how we can improve our message, otherwise, how can we continue?

Rethosarians deserve LIFE SUPPORT to compensate for our energies expended on helping humanity first, and KINDNESS to confirm our acceptance and personal security as Agents of Change.

Everyone has their own valuable contribution to solve the problems in the world – they may not be perfect – completely planned out – or even have a very clear idea of the final objective … but let’s not extinguish those little flames by exhaling cynical corporate CO2 attitudes.. let’s “Conspire” (breathe in together) to feed oxygen to each little cell that can change the world.

Exactly! Thanks for writing this. I’ve often had the same experience you’ve described above. I like your “life support” idea.

You’re totally right, kindness is the way to go. It can be so discouraging when people are cynical. I have a suggestion for you on how to win the support of others … now I’m warning you, it’s shallow, and it wasn’t even my idea, it was Arnold Schwartznegger’s (how ever you spell that) ... When discussing environmental matters, he said that they way to get people on board is to “make it sexy”. I thought about it and decided he’s right. When trying to convince someone, we need to speak their language … in this case the language of the masses and the media. You’d think that a logical and rational approach would be enough, but apparently it’s not. We are such emotional beings …

Not sure if this is useful at all … but hey, it’s a thought :D

Your last paragraph says it all… that’s an agreement that encompasses wholeness for all… That, to me, is the highest kind of comittment there is. Every cell sure needs to be cleansed and brought to realize its wholeness. Cynicism is a cancer… it is a disease that feeds upon the healthy organism!! Love it to death, with the choiceless choice of fearless integrity. As my daughter says: you rock!
