while i agree with naomi klein, I really take offense to this video and think it is very ineffective. i find it very hypocritical that she is saying people use shock to impose there message on people, but her movie is full of images that are meant to shock a viewer and then intermixing it with a message that Milton Friedman is bad but not really backing it up. In effect she is fighting against the “shock doctrine” by using a “shock doctrine”. It is a powerful short film but it has very little actual information which is to bad.

i agree with you to a point. i agree that the short film doesn’t do justice to her overall application of Milton Friedman’s economic shock treatment but at the same time, the film operates at a level that illustrates the metaphor used throughout the book. so i wouldn’t take offense to the video because it is ‘shocking’ per se nor would i say that she simply criticizes Friedman for ‘shock value.’ i think that since using subversive tactics for the ‘good’ of society is shocking, it doesn’t degrade the quality of klein’s argument or the quality of the short film. it simply acts as a primer for her book, which should be read and debated.

for the amount of ‘fear mongering’ that exists in contemporary politics, it’s no question that many people critique the use of ‘shock’ to get their point across and internalized. but this is exactly the root of what klein is critiquing. she isn’t necessarily using it to her advantage, she is largely using it as a target and the film is simply using it as an illustration….
