This is a huge deal in the U.S., and rightly so. Racism is still a big problem here, despite the lovely modern age we live in. The problem here isn’t the question of whether or not they did something wrong- they did. They beat the hell out of some punk who deserved it. The problem is this: In the long, well documented series of events leading up to this renown pummeling, not a single white brat was held accountable. Sure, there were a few suspensions from school, but that stopped being a realistic punishment ages ago. Now, in light of the generally lax level of punishment going around Jena, we would assume that the punishment these black kids were handed was also equally lax, yes? But no, it seems that the lax factory is shut down, and all we have left is pointedly harsh. Attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. WHAT? Facepalm You’re kidding right? Afraid not. It seems that when they get around to punishing people in Jena, they make up for missed opportunity. So what do we do? Clearly more than just the students in the backwaters of the Deep South are not the only people around who are racists. It seems that the whole of the judicial system has run amuck with pointy white hats. So what do we do? We don’t know. Racism is a bitch, and I, for one, don’t know how to get people to understand that it really doesn’t matter what color you are. How do we change a mind? One can hope that wherever YOU live, racism doesn’t thrive. If you’ve found the answer to getting the message through to people, let America know. Please tell us. Enough already. Let the kids go.
