I was amazed to see Kiev’s beautiful underground system completely ad free. Manila has massive adverts that look ugly and even worse when so many people cannot afford the products. I thinks large billboards should be banned. |

I agree with James. Large billboards should be banned from the face of the Earth. |

I grew up in Honolulu where outdoor advertising has been banned since at least the 1960s. Exemptions had to be granted when Wyland (an artist) painted a giant mural of a whale since the law considered almost anything decorative that could be seen from outside as advertising. Today the modified law still stands and even was used to ban billboard trucks (the ones that tow billboards around the city). Only indoor billboards are allowed, which are wall sized ads in places like parking garages, shopping malls etc, so long as they can not be seen from outside. Signs with ONLY the name of a store are allowed, but are subject to size limits. It’s a great law to have. |

I read this article in Adbusters (I love the mag). This is just amazing. The people are taking their space back. The movement is growing. The super rich corrupt corporations are getting nervous… |

Check out these pictures I found on flickr- http://flickr.com/photos/tonydemarco/sets/72157600075508212/ – This guy has taken many pictures of the missing billboards in Sao Paulo. Browsing through them I was trying to imagine what living in a city like that would be like, and how peaceful that would be. I’m taking a trip to South America next summer, maybe I should put Sao Paulo on my list of places to visit. |

That’s a great idea. There’s an organization in Philadelphia called S.C.R.U.B. that helps to fight eyesores in the community. Many cities around the world have so much natural beauty. Why ruin it by having these idols to consumerism distract our vision? |

Hi Ellie. The set you sent me is from Tony de Marco, the photographer who illustrated the article on Adbusters. The photo on my post is his. If you have time check my flickr page on www.flickr.com/photos/lilivc It’s not a very activist page but you may like. |

Rock on! Finally, a law I can obey! This is great stuff. They should contract out artists for all those empty billboards. Though, I dont know if Wyland painting a whale would suit the top of a building :D |
