It's quite literally, a watershed moment in the history of freshwater fish restoration in the Great Lakes. The one millionth Atlantic salmon is about to be released into the Credit River, a water course that feeds into Lake Ontario.
Bring Back the Salmon -- Lake Ontario (bringbackthesalmon.ca) is one of the largest freshwater conservation and species restoration projects in North America. It includes fish stocking and fisg production, habitat restoration, water quality assessment, research and monitoring and education outreach.
The goal of the program is to restore self-sustaining populations of Atlantic salmon to Lake Ontario and its tributaries within 10 to 15 years.
The ceremonial one millionth salmon will be released May 28 at Belfountain Conservation Area near Caledon, Ontario.
