A major barrier to human rights realization is awareness of those rights. One cannot exercise your rights if you do not know they exist. This is where media can play an essential service in developing nations as a tool to spread human rights awareness.

JHR encourages and trains journalists in local media organizations through workshops and long term media trainer placements; effectively increasing human rights content on the ground where it is needed the most. When JHR fosters a culture of human rights reporting at just one radio station, it can reach millions of people who otherwise would have no access to the language of human rights.

When a journalist is equipped to tell the stories of those in society who are otherwise ignored, their voices are amplified with the power to stop human rights abuses before they start.
