Environmental Activists Expose Dangers of E-Waste

November 14, 2008, Delhi, India: In the streets of Mustaffabad, a poor
quarter of Delhi, children in sandals sit on top of piles of broken
glass and twisted metal, smashing computer monitors. Men with
blowtorches melt circuit boards, while nearby, women sort and scrub
other boards with diluted acid. Charred fiberglass and copper dust
litter the ground.

This is the world of the electronic waste (e-waste) recyclers, who make
a living by tearing apart the toxic remains of old home computers, cell
phones and printer cartridges from the United States and other

than a motorbike and a mission, Clement Kitambala has been spreading
news about environmental issues in remote communities of the
war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo.

Amid renewed fighting that has displaced more than 130,000, ongoing

Electric Cars Legalized in Vancouver

"Vancouver city council voted Tuesday afternoon to give a green light to low-speed electric vehicles..."

"...The small light cars are already allowed under B.C. law to travel on
roads with a speed limit of 40 km per hour or less, but are only
allowed on roads with faster speed limits when municipalities vote to
permit them..."

Carbon-Free Does NOT Require Nuclear

Many prominent science magazines argue that solving the environmental crisis requires that we use substantially more nuclear energy.

If this was true I'd be all for ignoring the many health risks (including intentional and unintentional explosion) and centralization aspect for the sake of the climate.

But, I discovered from talking to some folks at the Sustainable Energy Summit at Amherst, that it certainly is not true. And this article explains how we can reach a carbon-free and nuclear-free society in scientific yet understandable terms.

All I ask in return is that you design a really cool site that gets people involved, spreads the Sustainability Symbol around the world and brings attention to at least one of the Climate Change related projects we're working on (Like "STOP the GLOFs") The rest will be up to you to use and design as you wish.

All this energy, while a large percentage of fruit in people’s backyard simply goes to waste because most homeowners lack the time and interest to properly share or store this food.

We’ve had Live Aid, Live8 and a plethora of other charity concerts in between, but on October 25th, Raine Maida ushered in a new era – the benefit busk. Armed with just an acoustic guitar and a couple of cardboard signs, Raine took to the streets of Toronto for a marathon all day show on street corners around the city.

The aim of the day was to raise $30,000 so that War Child Canada could rebuild a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Twelve hours later he was over two thirds of the way there, having raised an astonishing $22,000.

Losing both parents at a young age is something no child should face. It is hard to envisage recovering from such an experience. But just imagine if that was the beginning of your problems. What if you were the oldest of several children and suddenly responsible for raising your brothers and sisters in abject pov...

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

When most children in Canada turn 12, they’re busy attending school, spending time with their friends and family, and playing pick-up games of soccer or street hockey. But these seemingly ordinary childhood activities are not options given to many children living in conflict zones around the world.

A Long Way Gone is Beah’s story of a childhood lost during the civil war in Sierra Leone. Written in his own words, it recounts how he survived what many would find hard to even imagine. Fleeing his village to escape rebel attacks, being coerced into joining the conflict, and bei...

He said he feared a “blood bath” if aid groups were forced out of the region. His remarks came a day before the UN Security Council met to discuss deploying a mission to neighbouring Eastern Chad. Simmering ethnic tensions have worsened as the Darfur conflict has spread across the border.
