Environmental Activists Expose Dangers of E-Waste

November 14, 2008, Delhi, India: In the streets of Mustaffabad, a poor
quarter of Delhi, children in sandals sit on top of piles of broken
glass and twisted metal, smashing computer monitors. Men with
blowtorches melt circuit boards, while nearby, women sort and scrub
other boards with diluted acid. Charred fiberglass and copper dust
litter the ground.

This is the world of the electronic waste (e-waste) recyclers, who make
a living by tearing apart the toxic remains of old home computers, cell
phones and printer cartridges from the United States and other

than a motorbike and a mission, Clement Kitambala has been spreading
news about environmental issues in remote communities of the
war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo.

Amid renewed fighting that has displaced more than 130,000, ongoing

A Message of Hope, Love and Light

Dear AOKW Luminaries and Friends,

I cannot help but comment on the profound shift of consciousness that has just occurred as a result of this US election. It cannot be described in any other way but this: Awakening. Humanity has just been Awakened to the possibility of a New World Order; one that may now be built upon a foundation of Open Dialogue, Cooperative Collaboration and Equal Fellowship!

However, I feel that the road ahead will be quite a challenging and perilous one. The events that occur in the week ahead may test our collective determination and resolve.<...

"Vancouver city council voted Tuesday afternoon to give a green light to low-speed electric vehicles..."

"...The small light cars are already allowed under B.C. law to travel on
roads with a speed limit of 40 km per hour or less, but are only
allowed on roads with faster speed limits when municipalities vote to
permit them..."

New comment - Down with EcoElitism

I read an inrteresting article once about a retirement housing building. The owners installed solar. As they expected their electric bills went down. But there was a far more interesting outcome….. No survey was taken as to why everyone became eco-conscience as soon as the solar was up and running but it certainly points to a community effort and simple shame factor ...

New comment - Launch Graphic: Fair Trade

Marcus,
Thank you very much for giving me feedback. That the point of the image was unclear is just what I need to hear so as to tighten up the point of each piece I post. It does no good to make a visual comment that is not crystal clear to the viewer, without my having to explain it. My craft gets better the more people like yourself help me see what I am missing!
So about the image:
The farmer tied to the coffee cup… meaning he/she is counting on fair trade as a lifeline.
The conscious consumers praying to the the cup, symbolising the idealism that we can often throw up arou...

New comment - The Climate-Cost of Coffee

The easy answer is no. They’re separate groups, with different criteria for certification. That doesn’t, however, mean that RAC coffee ignores social change.

The RA and Fair Trade are a bit different in the way they go about it. Fair Trade’s focus is financial stability for the farmers, which can only happen if they’re healthy and able to work, and if they manage their crop to minimize loss. So their environmental policies are aimed at reaching that financial end.

You’re right Jason, we really need to prove other options work, just as we proved slavery alternatives worked. Slavery, we tend to forget, was the cornerstone of some economies, but on some deeply human level, we felt it was wrong. We are finding that is true about Capitalism as well, ask Keynes himself. Lynx, that striking criticism of Capitalism is right on.

The change in world temperatures when american aviation was grounded after the 11th of September was marked- worryingly so. As far as i’m concerned it’s one of the most emotive and effective examples for anthropogenic climate change. But then again, that’s why we say climate change, rather than global warming.

Are there limits to rewards, or are rewards necessarily derived from another’s “punishment”?

The limits to rewards exist. And these rewards are decided by the market. Despite Newman’s Own juice does great things with its profits, the market would not spend $50 for a glass of it.

As for punishment of the adverse industries, its quite simple; either avoid them or reduce your consumption. It’s when the bottom line contracts that people start to sweat and take a good look at where their business is going.

New comment - The Pardox of Capitalism

“The best thing we can do is reward the good doers.”

Questions: Are there limits to rewards, or are rewards necessarily derived from another’s “punishment”?

In response to lynx’s comment:

“capitalism is based on externalizing as many costs as possible and internalizing as many profits as possible”

While the world certainly seems to operate that way in practice, that is not the ‘theoretical’ basis of capitalism. What you are describing is a problem, and a big problem, but it is a problem ...

New comment - São Paulo, a city without ads

I grew up in Honolulu where outdoor advertising has been banned since at least the 1960s. Exemptions had to be granted when Wyland (an artist) painted a giant mural of a whale since the law considered almost anything decorative that could be seen from outside as advertising. Today the modified law still stands and even was used to ban billboard trucks (the ones that tow billboards around the city). Only indoor billboards are allowed, which are wall sized ads in places like parking garages, shopping malls etc, so long as they can not be seen from outside. Signs with ONL...

I was amazed to see Kiev’s beautiful underground system completely ad free. Manila has massive adverts that look ugly and even worse when so many people cannot afford the products. I thinks large billboards should be banned.

one other point – EXTERNALIZING.

capitalism is based on externalizing as many costs as possible and internalizing as many profits as possible, something this article hints at when the author mentions the true cost of oil. That externalizing takes all kinds of forms – from the smokestack that spews carcinogens into the air to the fact that as an employee your expected to pay the cost of getting to and from your job out of your own pocket. The most fundamental rule of the profit system is that the more you can avoid paying the higher your p...

New comment - The Pardox of Capitalism

the part that people are missing is that the “bad guys” who exploit scarce finite resources make big money exactly BECAUSE the resources they’re exploiting are finite. That’s basic supply and demand. Oil is valuable because it’s difficult to get to and because there’s always a demand for more of it then is actually available. In other words, the fundamental pricing structure of capitalism is such that companies that are exploiting finite and irreplaceable natural resources are virtually guaranteed to be profitable as long a...

I agree with Nathan’s commentary; big guys make millions of dollars… Can’t argue with that. GE just posted $5.4 billion in earnings in their second quarter for 2007. That’s a whole lot of mouths that could be fed. But, I think we need to understand the complete picture of big business before we ask them to give all the big profits away.

First of all, its important for us to remember that the big guys didn’t just start out big… they were small at one point in time. For example: In the late 80’s, an associate of mine started a small busin...

Thank you Ian for being who you are.
Capitalism has it’s place or it wouldn’t be here. If there is a better option than capitalism than it is all of our responsibility to prove that to be the case and to implement the better option. Kudos to you for not being a little guy.
An empowered person is transformational by their actions, intentions, and commitments. ME, I am shooting for empowerment and then some. Oil companies and tobacco companies mean nothing to me. I know where the alternatives are. Some of them are right here on Rethos.com

I buy Newman’s Own juice even though it’s more expensive. I think that there must be enough people who do because it’s still on the shelves and according to the label all profits go to charity. I also shop fairly traded goods whenever possible and encourage others to do the same. Big companies make millions off all the small savings. We can help millions if everyone would be willing to spend a tiny amount more but help the little guy instead of sweatshops and Profit driven Corporations.

That’s the thing. Like Nour mentioned, it was news for her. Wool farming seems like it would be harmless, after all, it’s not skin, or flesh, it’s excess hair. But it is cruel, and the majority of people wearing wool sweaters or socks right now have no idea what they have paid for.
