Disabled Refugees Face Inaccessible Services and Food Shortages in Ugandan Camps

September 23, 2008, Gulu District, Uganda: Refugees who have been
disabled by the war in Northern Uganda are confronting food shortages
and inaccessible public services in government-run camps. At the same
time they are under growing pressure to return home, even though they
lack the resources to resume a normal life.

This warning was issued recently by the Gulu Disabled Persons Union
(GDPU), an advocacy group. It comes at a time when the Ugandan
government is stepping up efforts to empty the camps, which still house
more than half a million internally displaced pers...

AFRICA: Too small to be fighting in anyone's war

(December 2003) - His comrades in the transit camp run by Save the Children-UK in Bunia, a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), called him 'Kadogo', which means "small" in Kiswahili. The name suited him for he was tiny, much too tiny, in fact, to be involved in anyone's war.

But at 12, Kadogo was already a veteran of a vicious bush war between ethnic militias in eastern DRC. So were his comrades at the transit camp, victims like him of a practice that has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Dubbed "an illegal and...

The provinces of Quebec and Ontario have shown great leadership by working together to institute a bilateral "cap-and-trade" system in an attempt to curb green house gas emissions. When the Canadian federal government is dragging its heels on what most consider the most important issue curretnly facing humanity, bilateral initiatives between provinces or municipalities makes a good deal of sense.

Are you looking to get involved in the fight against poverty?

Are you someone who’s passionate about development? What to get involved in the fight against poverty? Well, this is a message to help you in this quest!!

I’m sure you’ve encountered multiple messages, similar to this one, that ask you to join the fight against global poverty. But, doesn’t it seem like such a daunting task? In my experience, I’ve always had a hard time getting involved in poverty reduction and equality without addressing the issues that I see locally, everyday , here in Toronto.
New comment - Don't drink the water!

I am shocked to find out that 22% of all bottle water in N.America is recycled/reprocessed municipal water. I drink plenty of bottled water, although most of the times I replenish my bottles and I rinse them on most occasions.

New comment - Don't drink the water!

Great post. Can anyone help back up this post with some European sources of information and organisations? The article is aimed at Americans, but being European (from Holland, but living in Bulgaria for a while) I would love to see some more information on this when it comes to Europe.

Because I’m quite sure EU rules are a lot stricter than those of the US government, but still would want to see some info.

Biola ONE Campaign Leader

We need somebody who wants to get a dedicated group of people together to go after the ONE Campaign and get Biola on the map in their Campus Challenge!

It doesn’t take exceptional leadership or skill to get a group going; all it takes is someone willing to do the work. You’ll work with the SJM leaders and meet with them as the group progresses.

Rock on.
