Last night I was pleased to see the “Retail Activist” tote bag in the window of my local Housing Works Thrift Shop. I am on the board of directors of the shops, a not for profit agency which provides a variety of services for the homeless /AIDS population in New York City and beyond. We raise money by operating over half a dozen thrift stores in New York. Primarily the money comes from the sale of donated goods.Mexico City welcomes over 20,000 visitors and 3,000 members of the media today to convene AIDS 2008, the world’s largest HIV forum. Over the next five days we’ll hear new scientific research and intense dialogue on the major challenges facing the global response to AIDS. “Universal Action Now” is the theme, but what does that really mean?

The provinces of Quebec and Ontario have shown great leadership by working together to institute a bilateral "cap-and-trade" system in an attempt to curb green house gas emissions. When the Canadian federal government is dragging its heels on what most consider the most important issue curretnly facing humanity, bilateral initiatives between provinces or municipalities makes a good deal of sense.

The modern library goes beyond simply books and bookcases. It has become, thanks to the proliferation of the internet and electronic media, a way to connect and interact with the world at large.

Unfortunately the Makeni City Library is not yet a modern library, for it, like most buildings in the city, has no access to electricity. However, a private donation, a hot Saturday morning and a sheet of solar panels the size a beach towel is about to change that.
