Many prominent science magazines argue that solving the environmental crisis requires that we use substantially more nuclear energy.

If this was true I'd be all for ignoring the many health risks (including intentional and unintentional explosion) and centralization aspect for the sake of the climate.

But, I discovered from talking to some folks at the Sustainable Energy Summit at Amherst, that it certainly is not true. And this article explains how we can reach a carbon-free and nuclear-free society in scientific yet understandable terms.

This spokesman for the oil industry is so out of the loop or he is in total denial. The world cannot be sustained by using up fossil fuels. We have to explore and spend our resources on alternatives. The oil companies have to diversify into other sources of energy. The only thing is some of the new technologies don’t create continous income.

This essay is sound, well-written, and rational, but leaves out important perspectives. Capitalism is not freedom, for it thrives on an oppressed underclass, and profit depends on unpaid labor. By definition, it feeds off of domination, and for the last five centuries, has created vast inequalities across the globe.

The alternatives facing humans at this critical juncture in history are not merely black/white, free/oppressed, capitalism/tyranny. Contrast the narrow definition of freedom supplied by capitalism-~~the freedom to choose between cereal brands at the grocery store...~~

That is just sick. I consider myself fairly well knowledgeable about the “behind-the-scenes” stuff that goes on in various industries, but had no idea about the wool trade.

Animals were not meant to be industrialized!

Why do we not know about this crap? (I know the obvious answer but am still upset about it)

That’s the thing. Like Nour mentioned, it was news for her. Wool farming seems like it would be harmless, after all, it’s not skin, or flesh, it’s excess hair. But it is cruel, and the majority of people wearing wool sweaters or socks right now have no idea what they have paid for.

That is one economic crisis that could save the planet. We’d get up again. I hate the thought of weaning out cruelty instead of eliminating it so that life doesn’t get any rougher on us poor humans. We can deal.

I don’t think that America needs to be weaned off of it’s Micky D’s diet any more than I think Veal calves need to be weaned off of their chains. For those of you who haven’t heard, the AVA (American Veal Industry) has announced that they are phasing out chaining calves by their necks by 2017.

Good points. But I think Abe needs to be criticized for having slaves just as Gore needs to be criticized for eating meat. All I’m saying is that the spokeman for global climate change, should live as he preaches. That is the most effective way to influence people to change, prove to them that they can do it too. And America doesn’t even have to completely stop eating meat. If we even reduced our consumption by 1/10th, we would make a huge impact on the environment. Plus, we would create new industries and help struggling ones.
