Hello from Big Sur - Alec Henderson

Hello everyone,

After spending two months deep in the mountains of California's Central coast I and the majority of monks at the Tassajara Monastery have been evacuated due to the recent fires. My friends at the LA Times wrote a front page article http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-me-fires28-2008jun28,0,4613015,full.story
on our plight and this has generated some significant publicity.

I am hold up in Santa Cruz with the monastery dog, Ginger. She and I are well and blogging at

As Fire Approaches Big Sur Monastery Monks Prepare to Fight

TASSAJARA, CALIF. -- In this remote Zen enclave on Big Sur's forested
backside, wildfires lurk on three sides. As flames edge closer and ash
falls from a crimson sky, the Buddhist monks are readying for a final
stand.

Priests and students alike at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center have
been doffing their traditional black robes, hefting picks and shovels,
and forging 10-foot-wide firebreaks. Atop the roofs of the monastery's
old retreat cabins and meditation hall, they've jury-rigged plastic
pipe sprinkler systems.

Perhaps more serene than some, they were amon...

I think this is a great song and video:
Linkin Park – What I’ve Done
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8sgycukafqQ

Lyrics:

In this farewell
There’s no blood
There’s no alibi
‘Cause I’ve drawn regret
From the truth
Of a thousand lies

[Pre-Chorus:]
So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve done

[Chorus:]
I’ll face myself
To cross out what i’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what i’ve done

Put to rest
What you thought of me
While I clean this slate
With the hands of uncertainty

Hey Alex, Don’t assume I have the slightest idea of what I am talking about. Bonno is an international symbol of peace and reconciliation in the world. He is praised by millions adored by more. I am but an obscure and bitter soul who finds him pretentious and musically uninspired. See I love the Green Day kids though…so what do I know? Keep on being true to what you feel. Just keep you eyes open, ok my brotha? Peace out!

Is there a “Good Samaritan” clause in the Hummer sales contract that requires purchasers to render aid in the event they find themselves within a certain proximity of a disaster? Or are we to just count on the big hearts of those who leave a yearly carbon footprint the size of Montana when chips are down?

there’s a bike library program run entirely by volunteers in Minneapolis called the Yellow Bike Library. they’ve been going for the better part of a decade. you pay a anual fee ($15) and then you can check out a yellow bike for up to a week at a time whenever you need one. pick it up at any yellow bike hub, drop it off at any other. it’s great! and no corporate involvement needed.

Harrison Ford and John Travolta make use of their pilot’s licenses to rescue stranded hikers etc. The positive PR probably lessens the guilt of flying for fun. Who among us doesn’t have some vice, large or small, that we try to justify in some way? I like to have an adult beverage on a regular basis. But in doing so I support the industry that supplies the alcoholics. Yet I justify my actions with the research that shows moderate drinkers are healthier than teetotalers.

loved this the first time i read it and still love it. But it shouldn’t just be a joke, California should follow the Lakota’s lead and declare independence for real.

I’m dead serious.

really, if CA declared independance, what could they do to stop us? what would they do, invade LA? I think not… An independent California would be a nuclear power and the 8th largest economy in the world with a bigger population and economy then all the red states combined. There isn’t a damn thing they could do to stop us.

just my 2 cents.

Dear James:
It is not a “joke” but it is a humorous allegorical satire of what California, if she were a living being, might say to the states who voted for Bush..again if she were a human being which she is not. California and the other states who voted for Kerry (In the US a state can only be for one candidate for president), in other words, we don’t count up all the votes in the US and see who won, each state theoretically elects the president then sends its number of delegates to the electoral college and then that state casts its electoral votes in favor of whichever candidate...

I am all in favor of a healthy debate about gun control but how did this discussion end up on this post which is a cute essay about secession of the blue states and not at all about gun control? I mean, its ok by me, it just seems a bit of a non-sequitur.

So let me weigh in here while I am at it. In my opinion gun violence in the United States is epidemic. In fact its off the charts. In other countries with strict gun control laws the incidence of homicide and serious injury is a mere fraction of a percentage of the violence committed in the US. That being said, I cannot den...

We don’t need the state to control the armament of the populace. We need the people to control the armament of the state.

I agree that, as an instrument of violence, guns are the cause of much pain and suffering. However, I think that the only true gun control can come from a non-coercive re-evaluation of the individual’s relationship to the community and the community’s relationship to the governing power. In other words, so long as the state has instruments of violence, the people need them too…even though there a plenty of idiots who abuse this “political right”.

I play the role of outspoken skeptic to any PR or marketing from business. That isn’t to say that they are being purposely deceptive, but PR has a way of blinding people. For Tyson to be pushing it so hard, they clearly see that there is a competitive need for wording and may bypass any valid tests. For example, Monsanto took an aggressive...

New comment! - Senator Jim Inhofe's response to global warming

http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/12/21/16436/710 is a critique of where Inhofe gets his “science.”

If the basis for your position is utterly delusional it’s no surprise that what follows from it is more of the same.

New comment - Against Hypocrisy

I appreciate the response, Alex. Thank you. And I also agree with lynx.

You wrote, ”...social responsibility is a flexible term and a young concept.”

I disagree with this. The idea of social responsibility has been around for as long as there’s been a ‘social’ to speak of. I think you meant it’s a new concept within contemporary capitalist markets. That’s true. In previous US and now global markets, corporations haven’t seen the value in being socially responsible, so they haven’t tried to be. But now, with ...

Akeeba,

You are right that corporations are tip-toeing their way into absolute transparency and that social responsibility is a flexible term and a young concept. It is an ideal that is not being full met very from those that are considered CSR leaders.

I feel that rather than squashing this ideal before it can grow, it should encouraged and at the same time raised as a point for discussion and debate between consumers and the companies that they support or don’t support.

for-profit corporations are LEGALLY REQUIRED to place their bottom line and the profits of their shareholders ahead of all other considerations. as far as i’m concerned, “socially responsible” corporations are like gods and invisible pink unicorns – it’s impossible to prove they don’t exist somewhere out there in the cosmos, but I’ve certainly never encountered one and I don’t think it’s very likely that I ever will.

I don’t think it’s possible for for-profit corporations to be socially responsible. The day a for-profit corporation opens up its books to the people who work for that corporation and to consumers, showing every expense and every deposit and offers both consumers and employees the chance to vote on the direction of the corporation, will be the day it’ll be possible for for-profit corporations to be socially responsible.

We are moving because our existing building is in a terrible state and the owner won’t get it fixed, but we are excited about the move.

Now what we are getting is just over 1500 square feet divided into two office spaces (600 and 900 square feet). The smaller part will be used as a meeting/workshop/studio space and includes an extremely basic ‘kitchen&#821...

New comment - Would You Cross the Picket Line If Crossing the Picket Line Meant Watching TV?

The power of a collective, be it in a union or not, is always transformative. The more people say “enough” to unfair labor practices (and they abound, even in our society), the more solutions come to the surface. We have to say “no” to something negative before we can say “yes” to what is positive and constructive.
One of the ways we can do this, is surely, to symbolically and financially support those who unionize and strike.
Another is to take such action ourselves and organize like-minded people, with or without a union as the context.
A general...
