Grats to ya boy

Last night around 8pm I was at a house party here in Oakland getting
ready for my band’s set when somebody across the room shouted out
“Obama won! he did it!” and the whole room broke out in cheers and
clapping. I pulled out my cellphone and sent a text message to my
friend Labrie (who’s been pulling hard for an Obama victory and
recorded a couple songs supporting him and his candidacy) saying “Grats
to ya boy” and went back to working on getting our sound set up. Later
that night as we closed o...

When I was diagnosed with several dis-eases I was told by doctors I would only get worse, to be on pain pills and life looked grim. Through learning about the mind/body connection I was able to find teachers I resonated with to study so that I could heal myself. Two years later I am healthier than ever. I began to think about how wonderful it would be to have a large resource of inspirational leaders so that people would have one spot to go to -- to view some videos, hear about what others had learned about them and find out more about different modalities to heal...

Credit Card "Insiders" Speak Out About Abusive Practices

Earlier this year, former employees of MBNA and Bank of
America contacted AFFIL looking for a way to speak out about
disturbing sales practices they were trained to use as employees. Their stories confirm what
we've long suspected: that credit card companies extend credit
to those who can't afford it, and engage in a "tricks and traps"
business model designed to max out cardholders and keep
them on a debt treadmill as long as possible. Watch the video
and listen to what Cate Colombo
and Jerry Young have to say.

The immediate gratification of using plastic to buy an
iMac, tickets to a Coldplay concert and nights of bar hopping has a way
of coming back to haunt college students after graduation.

Despite their lack of a credit history and sizable
student loans, most college students can get their hands on credit
cards with as much ease as a swipe. And they're often lured into doing
so with awards like free T-shirts. Along with the freebies, however,
come some not-so-pleasant surprises: high interest rates and a range of
fees and penalties.

Hi all,

Lately, I've become increasingly involved with the common good bank project.

I was inspired by some discussions (with lynx in particular) here on rethos to educate myself enough to create some revolutionary financial institution - then I discovered it was already in progress.

Please check out the page, http://www.rethos.com/commongoodfinance. We need everyone's help for this thing to get off the ground. Having people sign up increases investor and state regulator confidence. A signature really helps, and if you want to help in other ways that can be arranged as well.

Almost three years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is still recovering from a storm that destroyed 80 percent of the city. While many are still struggling, New Orleans has also attracted thousands of young people from diverse backgrounds, who are passionate about rebuilding an American city in a more equitable way. By creating coalitions of talented young people in the private and public sector who work together, New Orleans is engaging urban enthusiasts in the rebuilding process.

We recently shared some information on sustainable seafood - but we thought it was time to discuss eating meat - are some options better than others, if you do decide to eat meat? Where can you look for local, organic food? Is local always the right answer? Is is greener to be vegan than vegetarian? How have you convinced people to eat less meat? What other answers are you looking for from our green team about what's on your plate? Check our blog at the end of the week for a response ...

change, to be heard and acknowledged. This capitalist system is indeed
rotting from the inside out, but what it calls spoiled, we call ripe
for change. Aristotle got it right to say that man is a political
animal. People are feeling the unnaturalness of prolonged political
isolation; we are cynical in sizing up politicians, caustic in
describing our "democratic" process, yet ignorant in the reasons behind
our feelings. We attribute them to man's nature, to inevitability,
because when something is inevitable it can be...

Principles of Fair Lending

Reinforcing the regulatory apparatus of the nation’s economy that
has collapsed under this administration is indeed one of the most
important challenges facing us today (“After the Fed,” editorial, Jan.

What won’t work is the typical patchwork approach to

to truly make a difference for borrowers, they need a comprehensive
approach to regulation.

While it did not identify the companies on its dance card, the F.B.I. said they included mortgage brokers, lenders, and the Wall Street banks that packaged and sold the securities. Investigators are looking for accounting fraud and possible insider trading at the companies, an F.B.I. spokesman said.

EDITORIAL
After the Fed

Whether or not the Federal Reserve’s recent dramatic interest rate cuts are the right medicine for today’s stalling economy — and the jury is very much out on that — it is clear that the Fed has used up a big chunk of its recession-fighting ammunition in a very short span of time. In just over a week, it has slashed its benchmark interest rate by a total of 1.25 percentage points, to 3 percent. That doesn’t leave a lot of room to cut further without opening the door to a potentially nasty upsurge in pr...

Check out this article from Slate by Nicholas Bagley: Crashing the Subprime Party How the feds stopped the states from averting the lending mess.

’...Some of the biggest players in the secondary mortgage market are national banks, and the states’ efforts to curb predatory lending clashed with the banks’ fervent desire to keep the market in subprime loans rolling.
We are already living in a $10 per gallon of gasoline world. Did that get your attention? Here are some things to think about:

The average yield of gasoline per barrel of oil differs widely based on the quality of the oil (logical), ranging from 5% to 30% of the 42 gallons in a barrel when using straightforward conversion methods. The price per barrel of oil that you read about is normally the “good stuff” (Texas or Arabian grade), yielding over 12 gallons of gasoline per barrel and as much as two thirds in prime conditions.</p...

I chose to write about this topic because it’s becoming too much of a big issue. Not only that, but I’ve seen too many people I know take the path of the “drug world” and end up broke, homeless, and without an education. This is my issue of passion because I was once introduced to this world and too many people get caught up in it making it their whole life. We need to stop the transport and selling of these drugs that are affecting families, neighborhoods, communities, and the world.

New comment - The Triple Bottom Line: How Today's Best-Run Companies Are Achieving Economic, Social and Environmental Success -- and How You Can Too By: Andrew W. Savitz with Karl Weber

This book was so good, I decided to join the author’s consulting practice! Seriously, I work on what I believe in, and the private sector is so powerful today – working to move companies toward sustainability is a key challenge of our time. I also agree wholeheartedly with Philip about the concept behind DragonTHINK – if companies are motivated by their stakeholders, then we as stakeholders (consumers, investors, voters, etc) have a responsibility to steer them straight. I’m working on a book with this theme now, and any thoughts from the awesome Rethos communi...

Lakota Declare independence from United States

I first saw this on myspace but wanted to double-check it before posting it here – and I found confirmation here: http://www.republicoflakotah.com/about.html

The Lakota Nation has officially withdrawn from treaties that allowed the United States to annex their land and have declared themselves an independent nation. They are currently seeking international recognition and waiting for an official acknowledgment from the United States federal government.

And, the very best part, they’re completely...

“No one – especially a victim of a heinous, violent crime – should be denied access to a judge and jury because of a binding mandatory arbitration clause in an employment contract.

“Unfortunately, this is what is happening to Jamie Leigh Jones, who recently told ABC’s 20/20 that she was gang raped while working for a Halliburton subsidiary in Iraq.
Big Oil lets sun set on renewables

Shell, the oil company that recently trumpeted its commitment to a low carbon future by signing a pre-Bali conference communique, has quietly sold off most of its solar business.

The move, taken with rival BP’s decision last week to invest in the world’s dirtiest oil production in Canada’s tar sands, indicates that Big Oil might be giving up its flirtation with renewables and going back to its roots.

Displaced Fleeing War in Somalia Face Humanitarian Crisis

Tens of thousands of Somalis are living in camps like this one north of the capital, Mogadishu, suffering from a lack of water, food, and access to medical treatment.

The violence in Somalia escalated this year to some of the worst levels in over 15 years, causing an unknown number of civilian casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from the capital. Many of those remaining in Mogadishu are staying in makeshift camps with little more than ripped cloth and plastic sheeting for shelter and are exposed to a high degree of violence

Lynx,

I acknowledge my absence from this debate. My incompetence can be partly blamed on college finals—and a scorched memory. I actually just bought a book called “Pacficism as Pathology” which makes the same argument against nonviolence (I think). I plan on giving that an honest read, and coming back when my mind is healthy to spark this much needed discussion.

As you consider how to celebrate the holidays responsibly, take some time to protect yourself from credit card tricks & traps. Read AFFIL’s Holiday Credit Card Tips before you break out the plastic this season, at http://www.affil.org/consumer_rsc/holiday-credit-card-tips.

1. Don’t get tricked, trapped or suckered into a card with bad terms. If you want a credit card, get one with a long-term low interest rate (APR). If you get a low introductory rate, chances are it’ll start at 0% and then jump to 20% with one almost-on-time-but-didn’t-quite-make-it payment. Jennifer Rakowski of Oakland, CA had been with her bank
for 15 years when, before she knew what hit her, she accumulated a series of overdrafts in quick succession that put her over $300 in the red.

Has something like this happened to you?

Consumers are catching on to the ways in which banks artificially increase overdrafts, costing their account holders billions per year in unfair fees.

When the House Financial Services Committee was debating H.R. 946 this month, Congresswoman Carolyn Malone...

So here’s me being hypocritical to some degree and just saying that there is no such thing as sustainable meat, from my point of view. Thought I don’t believe everything he says, I reccommend reading Daniel Quinn. We need to figure out some kind of nouveau agricultural idea, because the way we do it now just isn’t working. One more thing I often consider is how many billion people there are in the world. First world countries eat more meat, because people residing the...

Bottom line is no matter how it is produced meat requires the suffering and killing of a sentient being. Cows, pigs etc have as much emotion and sensation as any house pet. The free-range definition is a deceiving one. many free frange animals are slaughtered in the same facilities used by factory farms, and often the conditions on free range farms, while “cageless” are just as inhumane.
I was in an abusive marriage for years. I’ve been out of it for about three years now and I’m still trying to figure things out.

My parent’s stayed together when they shouldn’t have. I do think that had something to do with why I stayed so long. I had no one to show me or tell me that it was ok to leave. That I could survive on my own with my children.

I don’t think this question can be answered with ONE study. My ex wasn’t an alcohol...

New comment - Call Out Litter Bugs

I love this post. I hate it when people litter. It’s stupid considering there’s probably a trash can of some sort just a short walk away.

I especially hate it when people throw litter out of their cars. My car may look like a tornado hit it, but at least it will make it to the trash eventually rather than on the side of the highway! The trash of course, not my car!

New comment - On Nonviolence

Lynx, I’m afraid of that day to be honest. Because I know I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror if I didn’t get out there and fight back. What does everyone think would happen if a massive uprising took place that threatened to take away the power and privilege of the few. If we marched and took control of our natural resources, and our mass communications. If we had a plan as to how to use them efficiently and democratically. They would find any and every excuse to use violence….you better believe it. Pacifism works fine right up to that point, then you’v...

Thanks everyone for all of your great comments. I was not expecting a debate to kick off here.

The soybean issue is also bothering me. I do not feel like we should need to choose between animals and trees. Someone obviously needs a kick in the balls. No one should be messing with our rain forests.
This is in response to what you said about it taking something radical (and I am curious what you had in mind there), but what I am suggesting is that moderation, which leads to a nation of one people who all agree on one thing … that we are a people … is radical for our times. This means that we would become a single unit of people, a country. This, together with a ge...

Diet for a New America” by John Robbins … was that mentioned ? Also, as a veggie I must say one of the things u never want to face as a carnivore is the suffering u cause another sentient being. It honestly & simply takes a certain level of dishonesty & detachment to be a carnivore. If you were truly honest with yourself you could no longer eat meat. I believe it was Shaw who said it best: Until we stop being the graves for dead animals we as a species shall never live in Peace. (major paraphrasing!)

Hey chirrens!

Firstoffly, let me say that I love this post. Sometimes a firm statistical slap in the face is just enough to make someone consider a- how shall I put it- greener diet. Its what made me go Vegan.

Now before some of you carnos out there cringe, I have no bad feelings towards you. Everyone I know is a carno, save for my flat-mate.

I understand that many (myself included) learned about “Animal Rights” from Peter Singer, but he is a utilitarian and not actually opposed to using animals. If you want to learn about abolition (which is what AR used to be before it was co-opted by animal welfare), read Professor Gary Francione’s work. His website, www.abolitionistapproach.com, has very accessible flash presentations that explain the differences between animal rights and animal welfare, what animal rights actually is (contrary to what PETA might say), and why property rights ar...

Honestly, I am having such an authentically difficult time responding to this.

I didn’t mean to alienate anyone. As you can see from my previous comment I am supportive of those who take a step in the right direction. Your proposal would be such a step if it could be implemented in a wide spread fashion. Unfortunately, that is highly unlikely considering the massive demand for cheap meat. Oh, and I didn’t mean that all meat lovers are McDiers. Long before I stopped eating meat, I gave up fast food.

If you are eating meat sustainably and humanely then cudos to you. Perhaps, you will show people how to eat meat responsibly and in moderation&#823...

Hmm… well I think essentially we agree. You see, my scenario never – ever – included eating anything, from McDonald’s. Because I would like to point out that not all of us who eat meat are guilty of patronizing McDonalds.

Certainly, I agree that that kind of meat consumption is completely unsustainable. I was thinking more along the lines of eat what you, or your neighbour, can grow.

When I lived in England pretty much all of my friends and neighbours had their own chickens. Even a friend who lived in a terraced house in the middle of the c...

No I am not going to try and flame baste you. I would just like to say that your scenario would work if there weren’t 6 billion McDonald’s loving meat eaters out there. That’s a lot of “free range” animals. I guess it would intorduce a whole new level of urban sprawl, that dedicated to the “local” livestock we would eat. Yikes, I can just imagine what north america would look like if we didn’t import our meat from south american nations.

Wouldn’t it be great if every city had a team of “Litter Maids”, like metre maids who could roam the city all day, ready to give tickets to litterers they catch in the act??

Since we don’t have those (yet) one of the best ways to illustrate the enormity of the problem is to join in, or initiate community clean-ups.

Here in Calgary, there’s a riverbank cleanup every spring. The city organizes it, and gets companies or groups to gather their members to volunteer. My boyfriend and I did it this spring with his company, and it was great.</p...

Ok, before you whack me with the spinach too (and by the way, chard would make a much more useful weapon) I would like to make one suggestion for those considering vegetarianism.

Leaving ethical reasons out of it, it is possible to eat meat fairly sustainably. The environmental detriment comes from commercial livestock production, not the existence of the animals (ruminants and their pesky methane excepted), or the consumption of them.

New comment - The Meat Industry and the Environment

You can download a copy of the report via the Food and Agriculture Organization website – http://www.fao.org/ag/magazine/0612sp1.htm – and it certainly makes for interesting reading. I must admit I have always been a meat eater, although I am certainly now revising my opinion. I agree that it’s the responsibility of the more economically developed countries to also show greater social awareness, and if by changing our eating habits we can have a positive effect then this is vital.

The report doesn’t promote a complete change, or indeed an anti-livestock ...

New comment - The Meat Industry and the Environment

Can you post a link to this study? I’d be interested to learn about how “livestock” was defined. For example are fish livestock? In Asia and parts of Africa where wet rice (vs dry rice) is farmed (think rice paddies vs just fields with dry dirt at the bottom) it is common to raise fish in the water simultaneously. This helps to fertilize the rice, reduce insects which the fish feed on, and provide additional food with nearly no human effort when the rice is harvested and the field drained of water. It is an extremely environmentally friendly form of farrming.

New comment - On Nonviolence

Lynx,
The debate is an important one certainly. I think we should talk about the extent to which nonviolence is a tactic, and the extent to which it should be the only tactic. However, I disagree completely with your facts. I will address them point by point when I have more time, but I think your painting of history is not only inaccurate but more or less propaganda. I mean no offense by my accusation, which of course, is but an accusation until I back it up. I plan on doing so very soon, and hopefully we can have a very meaningful debate.
Until then,
Eli
