Dan: The economic doctrine really is like religious dogma, as you said. Another term I've heard used that is pretty descriptive is "market fundamentalism." The idea that if you just turn the markets loose all our problems will be solved is beyond absurd. Humans assign monetary values to things and resources that are not exploited are considered without value. Within this dogma, clean air, clean water, healthy oceans, and healthy forests have no intrinsic value except for the profits that can be wrung from them. Thanks for your comment!

I believe you've addressed three of the main issues we must face in the near future. Unlimited growth is a logical and physical impossibility. You cannot get something from nothing! When you burn the last of the coal, kill the last of the tuna, pollute the last aquifer, raise the last forest; there is no more. This economic doctrine is closer to religious dogma than anything else. It takes great hubris to deface the earth all while claiming humanity is on the path of progress.

Bravo!! Wonderful, insightful, intelligent article! As a formerly-diagnosed ADHD kid now all grown up, I can relate and appreciate this piece tremendously. Thankfully, my mother had the insight and the fortitude to weather out the behavioral issues without medicating me... unlike all of these poor thousands of children who are sedated every day in our country. We need to stop allowing teachers, administrators, psychiatrists, misguided and tired parents, and the pharmaceutical companies the power to tamp out the small flames of independence and individuality that could become vast fires ...

Great article that gets you thinking. I experienced a case when a boys behaviour was the onset to a servere mental illness that has lasted 25 years of his adult life so far. Most bad behaviour may be normal but not in every case.

Lee, This article is downright beautiful. Nicely stated Heather. I am particularly fascinated by the author's thesis that psychologists and psychiatrists are a class of people prone to excessive conformity and that this may account for their tendency to pathologize defiance. Perhaps the DSM V should have a new condition called CCD (Conditioned Conformity Disorder). Heather, please go out from high school and take your ideas and do great things with your life. I believe that there is no such thing as "excess" passion for liberty. As a high school student, I often feel like I am being "enslaved" in a way, being forced to follow rules that noone will/is required to explain to me. I understand that there need to be rules and regulations, but I also believe that the individuals being forced to abide by these rules deserve an explanation of why. And if/when they decide that they disagree with the rules, and chose to rebel against these rules, I think it's ludacris to label them as mentally ill. I think Alec is right that net neutrality is at the heart of our Internet communication freedom, but I don't think it's yet a done deal that the laws are going to change in favor of the telecoms. Act now and put the pressure on, through your legislators, to ensure that net neutrality remains intact. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that communication channels like Rethos will get the distribution they deserve.

Its a common theme for bloodless corporate evil doers to blur the distinction between laws and government. The current regulations which force AT&T to swallow the entire net when passing it on to DSL customers are content neutral and thus if AT&T wants to do business through its phone lines it cannot reach into its network stream and, for example, block Google until it pays a network toll for the privilege. I’d say it’s corporations and the government… The US government uses the internet to infiltrate activist groups, spy on people, etc. But I agree with Alec- AT&T is pulling a bait and switch on us by making it seem like it’s only the government that’s a danger and that corporations are our friend. Same line of poo the media networks feed us about Democrats and Republicans, that they are polar opposites when in fact they are both corporate-funded PR campaigners campaigning for the same exact thing.

thanks for spreading the word…..one needs only to look at China’s governmental grip on the internet to know that there are limits to the freedom we think we have on the net.
