Hello from Big Sur - Alec Henderson

Hello everyone,

After spending two months deep in the mountains of California's Central coast I and the majority of monks at the Tassajara Monastery have been evacuated due to the recent fires. My friends at the LA Times wrote a front page article http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/cal/la-me-fires28-2008jun28,0,4613015,full.story
on our plight and this has generated some significant publicity.

I am hold up in Santa Cruz with the monastery dog, Ginger. She and I are well and blogging at

As Fire Approaches Big Sur Monastery Monks Prepare to Fight

TASSAJARA, CALIF. -- In this remote Zen enclave on Big Sur's forested
backside, wildfires lurk on three sides. As flames edge closer and ash
falls from a crimson sky, the Buddhist monks are readying for a final
stand.

Priests and students alike at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center have
been doffing their traditional black robes, hefting picks and shovels,
and forging 10-foot-wide firebreaks. Atop the roofs of the monastery's
old retreat cabins and meditation hall, they've jury-rigged plastic
pipe sprinkler systems.

Perhaps more serene than some, they were amon...

school lunch though, always being sent off with a brown bag or more likely
running home for lunch since I lived close to my school, could see it in fact
from my bedroom window. It was that kind of neighborhood, a thorough network of

Cuban Relations

In January of 1959, Fidel Castro
was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Cuba after leading a revolution against
the United States
backed Dictator Fulgencio Batista. Castro quickly established a one party
socialist style economy in Cuba.
Next, he sought to build international relations with powerful countries in
order to improve Cuba.
Castro first turned to United States
for assistance but the United States
rejected any relations because of the paranoia fear of Communism in the United
 States. Cuba
then looked to the United States
greatest rival at the time, the Soviet Union.<...

In 1994 China, an emerging super power, desperately in need of new oil sources helped a poor Government in Khartoum convert the Sudanese nation into oil exporters. In the 14 years since, as the oil and the money flowed, the relationship between the two nations has blossomed.

Today, China accounts for a quarter of Sudan’s imports and for nearly 70% of it’s, oil led, exports. The economic monopoly enjoyed by China through soft loans and state owned company investing in the Sudanese economy resulted, from its outset, in an incredible amount of Chinese poli...

New comment! - A short story on racism

I like this writing style but the piece does ring a bit of the same kind of false feminism found in the statement “I’m a feminist: I love women!” Meaning I love women in a far-away sexual way, not in the way I interact closely with or trust or respect them as human beings. It has a “them” feel to it, even if it’s supposed to be complimentary. So, yeah, I’d say it’s just a different flavor of racism, but racism all the same.

Oh yeah, and what’s with the graphic? lol I don’t get it.
