Electric Cars Legalized in Vancouver

"Vancouver city council voted Tuesday afternoon to give a green light to low-speed electric vehicles..."

"...The small light cars are already allowed under B.C. law to travel on
roads with a speed limit of 40 km per hour or less, but are only
allowed on roads with faster speed limits when municipalities vote to
permit them..."

At least there is some progress! Way to Go Zenn and the province of British Columbia :)

Don't Patronize Me: The Economy 101

I have now seen at least a dozen television commercials and psuedo-short-documentaries and news blurbs about "how we got into this financial mess" and "what exactly is a credit crunch?" I find it to be rude, disdainful, patronizing and insulting that somehow, we (the American public) are deemed too ignorant to understand what has brought us, collectively, to the edge of financial ruin. Some of these pieces of "information" are delivered in cartoon format, no less, which gives me the eery feeling of being four years old and watching School House Rock, learning how a Bill becom...

Santropol Roulant is an award-winning community organization founded and run by young
people in Montreal. We bring people together across generations and

engaging youth to take an active role in their community. Santropol Roulant uses food as a vehicle to create trust and build bridges between

Greed Based Society: A Rebuttal

I consider myself a scientific person, encouraged by
empirical evidence; so, at the surface Friedman’s argument for capitalism is
compelling. Several problems arise, however, upon a more mindful take of his
words. His examples are flawed, his history skewed, his definitions conflated.

First, the indigenous tribes of the world may object to his
“crystal-clear” account of history, stating that only societies that exploit
self-interest have escaped grinding poverty; although that is a fairly minor
point. More surprising is ...

Carbon-Free Does NOT Require Nuclear

Many prominent science magazines argue that solving the environmental crisis requires that we use substantially more nuclear energy.

If this was true I'd be all for ignoring the many health risks (including intentional and unintentional explosion) and centralization aspect for the sake of the climate.

But, I discovered from talking to some folks at the Sustainable Energy Summit at Amherst, that it certainly is not true. And this article explains how we can reach a carbon-free and nuclear-free society in scientific yet understandable terms.

As Fire Approaches Big Sur Monastery Monks Prepare to Fight

TASSAJARA, CALIF. -- In this remote Zen enclave on Big Sur's forested
backside, wildfires lurk on three sides. As flames edge closer and ash
falls from a crimson sky, the Buddhist monks are readying for a final
stand.

Priests and students alike at the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center have
been doffing their traditional black robes, hefting picks and shovels,
and forging 10-foot-wide firebreaks. Atop the roofs of the monastery's
old retreat cabins and meditation hall, they've jury-rigged plastic
pipe sprinkler systems.

New comment! - Cuban Relations

While supported in trade agreements with the ex-Soviet Union, Cuba thrived... every citizen had medical coverage and free education, and the arts were lively. The pain of a US mandated-embargo, and the collusion of the UK government to comply with policy out of Washington - was only felt when the Soviet Union collapsed, yes. It would be in Cuba's best interest not to succumb to the financial blackmail of the US, the World Bank and the WTO. Jamaica was held hostage, and may still be, by these forces when they gave in to trade "support" that ruined their native rural culture and local farm...

However, the Inuit populations overwhelmingly identifies themselves as Canadian (this, I think, is Canada’s most compelling claim to the region, and I think it is much better than any claims made by other competing nations.)

That being said, however, as the arctic icescape “shrinks,” these same Inuit people have even less access to many of the regions they previously did.
New comment! - The American Political Party System

This is a thoughtful and well-put article about what’s wrong with the American party system. It does seem as though voting within the parties preserves the status quo rather than effecting any actual change. Still, what I’d like to see is the ‘what we can do about it’. I am about to be of voting age and I would like, very much, to vote in such a way as to be able to make change.

(A side-note in response to Akeeba: Stating that America’s system is similar to the one-party system in Communist countries is perfectly alright and not insulting to any ac...

New comment! - The American Political Party System

i think this is an issue that many people in other countries with multiple party systems have recognized about the american ‘democratic’ system. hopefully more people will become aware of this ‘two sides of the same coin’ system but will choose to become involved in a solution, rather than remaining indifferent.

Overall, I agree with your idea that the two party system is no good and that it’s actually a one party system in disguise. A common question I ask current politicians is: how are you going to open up the political process to more than just Republicans and Democrats? Many of them fail to answer the question.

The mentioning of communism in relation to political parties isn’t completely accurate because communism is an economic system that can also be democratic. The two party republic of the United States exists within a capitalist economic system, or as some mig...

ONE Campaign's Campus Drive

The ONE Campaign has started a PR drive that focuses around college campuses. It should be lots of fun. It is kind of a contest to see which school can accumulate the most points by engaging in publicity for the ONE Campaign. The school teams win prizes. The ONE Campaign wins more public visibility.

So go ahead. Locate your alma mater (or favorite school) and sign in to help them rack up points and spread an awareness about the ONE Campaign.
