Impact of the global financial and economic crisis on health

Statement by WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan

We face a severe financial crisis of unprecedented dimensions in a
world that has never before been so closely connected and
interdependent. The consequences are global. The situation is volatile.
The current financial crisis is rapidly becoming an economic crisis and
threatens to become a social crisis in many countries.

The crisis comes at a time when commitment to global health has never
been higher. It comes in the midst of the most ambitious drive in
history to reduce poverty and distribute ...

than a motorbike and a mission, Clement Kitambala has been spreading
news about environmental issues in remote communities of the
war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo.

Amid renewed fighting that has displaced more than 130,000, ongoing

Dear AOKW Luminaries and Friends,

I cannot help but comment on the profound shift of consciousness that has just occurred as a result of this US election. It cannot be described in any other way but this: Awakening. Humanity has just been Awakened to the possibility of a New World Order; one that may now be built upon a foundation of Open Dialogue, Cooperative Collaboration and Equal Fellowship!

However, I feel that the road ahead will be quite a challenging and perilous one. The events that occur in the week ahead may test our collective determination and resolve.<...

the country's independence, has joined the Board of The Advocacy

Nepal and Devin Greenleaf, a former AP Peace Fellow in Nepal, have also

important AP constituency, signals an increased role for the Board as
the organization prepares for 2009. Mr Jessen-Petersen will explore

Nicaraguan President Ortega Not Welcome at Salvador Summit, Women Activists Say

Advocates for women's rights in El Salvador are calling on their
government to bar the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, from
attending an upcoming presidential summit because of his attempts to
repress and intimidate women in his country.

In an Oct. 5 press conference, advocates from CEMUJER, a leading
Salvadoran women's group, joined other human rights groups in
expressing solidarity with Nicaraguan women. They urged Salvadoran
President Antonio Saca to tell Mr Ortega he is unwelcome at the XVII

Advanced polling for our federal elections is already underway and it
seems, at least by the polls, that the incumbent government might just
sneak past with a victory. Without taking sides, I think the victory
would probably have more to do with a lack of serious options rather
then the governance of the 'defending champions'.

A Canada Election study indicates that almost the entire decline (~10%)
in voter turnout over the last 15 years is due to the 18-24 age group.
This is unalarming, though, and the trend has been seen in many
countries across the gl...

Positively Negative Syndrome

..Is what a lot
of us experience on a regular basis, especially when it comes to
professional decisions. Personally, it seems to be that the second or
third thoughts regarding a particular decision seem to be negatively
inclined. It is often a case of one foot in the positive and the other
in the negative territory! This slip is called Positively Negative by
the author of the article whose link is attached below. I can partially
relate to that.

Gone are the days of boom?

With three out of five top banks biting the dust, other financial companies being bailed out and much more damage to potentially follow, it seems that the economic booms of the past, such as the one in the 90's, won't be seeing the light of the day again.

The sub-prime fiasco, I think, will pave way to a reduction in consumer spending. If that happens on a large scale, the first casualty will be luxury and semi-luxury goods. Tech companies and Retail giants could face the brunt of the emptier pockets of American taxpayers.

The failure of the economic bailou...

September 26, 2008, Basildon, UK: Local authorities are

The Saint Christopher's Centre, which opened in May, has become

New comment! - Ending Famine, Simply by Ignoring the Experts

I think it’s critical to note that the experts being ignored were economists, political bureaucrats, and politicians, NOT agronomists, aid workers, soil scientists, ecologists, etc.

Hopefully the use of inorganic fertilizers is a bridge strategy while they develop a more sustainable agricultural system, because otherwise this is just a story of famine delayed.

In my experience, I’ve always had a hard time getting involved in poverty reduction and equality without addressing the issues that I see locally, everyday , here in Toronto. So, how can all these considerations be reconciled, and translated i...

New comment - The AIDS Conspiracy in Africa

This is a frightening report. It’s terrible to think there’s so much misinformation, although it seems fairly common these days to see conspiracies in every direction. I’d love to see links to further reports: How widespread is this conspiracy theory? Does this suspicion spread beyond Sierra Leone?

Don’t get me wrong. I like this project but I’m not sure about the “window” to the rest of the world. Personally I will like new generations to be less Microsoft dependent. I hated when I knew that Microsoft was part of this project.

If this window refers to the Internet, yes, it is good but needs guidance. For instance: In La Paz – Bolivia, despite you can find a Internet Cafes every two blocks and the internet is even cheaper than in Canada. people are not really well informed. People consume more junk than anything else.

Biola ONE Campaign Leader

We need somebody who wants to get a dedicated group of people together to go after the ONE Campaign and get Biola on the map in their Campus Challenge!

It doesn’t take exceptional leadership or skill to get a group going; all it takes is someone willing to do the work. You’ll work with the SJM leaders and meet with them as the group progresses.

Rock on.

New comment - free laptops for children

I’ve heard of this. It’s a great idea, I think. These laptops are durable, light, and inexpensive compared to market. I’m curious to see what effect this will have in the North American market place, as they neither use Windows nor the Intel chip.
