Advanced polling for our federal elections is already underway and it
seems, at least by the polls, that the incumbent government might just
sneak past with a victory. Without taking sides, I think the victory
would probably have more to do with a lack of serious options rather
then the governance of the 'defending champions'.

A Canada Election study indicates that almost the entire decline (~10%)
in voter turnout over the last 15 years is due to the 18-24 age group.
This is unalarming, though, and the trend has been seen in many
countries across the gl...

Electric Cars Legalized in Vancouver

"Vancouver city council voted Tuesday afternoon to give a green light to low-speed electric vehicles..."

"...The small light cars are already allowed under B.C. law to travel on
roads with a speed limit of 40 km per hour or less, but are only
allowed on roads with faster speed limits when municipalities vote to
permit them..."

At least there is some progress! Way to Go Zenn and the province of British Columbia :)

Don't Patronize Me: The Economy 101

I have now seen at least a dozen television commercials and psuedo-short-documentaries and news blurbs about "how we got into this financial mess" and "what exactly is a credit crunch?" I find it to be rude, disdainful, patronizing and insulting that somehow, we (the American public) are deemed too ignorant to understand what has brought us, collectively, to the edge of financial ruin. Some of these pieces of "information" are delivered in cartoon format, no less, which gives me the eery feeling of being four years old and watching School House Rock, learning how a Bill becom...

of us experience on a regular basis, especially when it comes to

in the negative territory! This slip is called Positively Negative by
the author of the article whose link is attached below. I can partially
relate to that.

Gone are the days of boom?

With three out of five top banks biting the dust, other financial companies being bailed out and much more damage to potentially follow, it seems that the economic booms of the past, such as the one in the 90's, won't be seeing the light of the day again.

The sub-prime fiasco, I think, will pave way to a reduction in consumer spending. If that happens on a large scale, the first casualty will be luxury and semi-luxury goods. Tech companies and Retail giants could face the brunt of the emptier pockets of American taxpayers.

The failure of the economic bailou...

September 26, 2008, Basildon, UK: Local authorities are
threatening to demolish a community center built by the Dale Farm
Travellers, creating new tensions as the long-running eviction battle

New comment - Biodiesel bus at the Ohio State Green Fair (part 1)

The link is informative, Sarah, but not directly applicable here.

As the guys mention in their video, they’re running the bus off of vegetable oil discarded from restaurants. Technically it’s not biodiesel, which — as mentioned in your link — is often made from palm oil.

There’s a place for debates over the lobbying role of subsidized United States agribusiness, the environmental effects of spraying and growing enormous crops of inefficient but politically favored corn, and so on.

I’d hate to see anyone walk away from this thread ...

Biodiesel is part of the solution, but it important to know it’s origins.
Please read the excerpt from an article by KRISTA MAHR/RIAU published in Time Mag below.

....The biodiesel boom has a high environmental cost, however. Critics say it’s contributing to global warming. Tropical forests help remove millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year. Burning and clear-cutting not only eliminates one of the planet’s crucial air-filtration systems, the process also releases even more carbon dioxide into the air, in s...

New comment - Philanthropy Is For Everyone

Research into giving has uncovered the facts, the poor are far more generous with what they have than the rich. It is not a matter of budget with them, or compassion, or feeling good, or tax deductions, or God’s blessings it is simply a “I’ve been there, I know what it’s like, and I don’t want anybody to have to go through that.” way of thinking.
Here in America, the bulk of all giving is done by the average and below average person who has nothing to gain by being generous. They don’t qualify for tax deductions, and nobody writes about their gi...

Welcome to Rethos Richard!

I hope many people read your excellent post on why philanthropy works, and how it’s good for you!

Cash is good of course, but equally valuable to those starting to exercise their passion for humanity, are recognition, encouragement and lending a hand.

Many on this site appear to be social entrepreneurs (even if they don’t realize it) and yes, they (we) need cash to pay for food and lodging, but as many are social “start-ups”, what we need even more are the step-by-step, concrete and constructive suggestions,...
