I read an inrteresting article once about a retirement housing building. The owners installed solar. As they expected their electric bills went down. But there was a far more interesting outcome….. Suddenly the recycle bins were filled to over flowing, the water bill went down, and the trash bins were 1/3 as full as before (recycleable items being separated I imagine) and the gas bill for heatinh whent down 50%. No survey was taken as to why everyone became eco-conscience as soon as the solar was up and running but it certainly points to a community effort and simple shame factor ...

I agree that privacy and handling of personal information is a major issue that has been raised on this thread. Just today, there was an Associated Press story about Facebook’s “Beacon,” and the controversy surrounding this application’s disclosure of user information.

My problem with Rethos is not that they’re making money. It’s the lack of transparency. I believe it’s perfectly ok to make money, but not by deceiving people. There were lots of questions asked in these threads, only a few of which were answered. One of the most straightforward questions is still unanswered: what exactly is being done with our information? The privacy policy is vague. It’s a fair question that deserves more than a little teasing about possible attendance at a Rainbow Gathering or accusations of distrust.

Bottom line is no matter how it is produced meat requires the suffering and killing of a sentient being. Cows, pigs etc have as much emotion and sensation as any house pet. The free-range definition is a deceiving one. many free frange animals are slaughtered in the same facilities used by factory farms, and often the conditions on free range farms, while “cageless” are just as inhumane. Nationalism is definitely a contender in terms of bringers of death, and I’m sure religion is very often used as a tool. But the simple fact is that the violence and cruelty of the Abrahamic religions make them particularly useful for those ends. No government has ever used, say Buddhism, as a reason to start a war or to commit genocide. They can’t, because it truly is a religion of peace.

I hear these facts about livestock production. I did not realize the amounts of wastage that occurs in this industry.

As for going veggie, I have my reservations. for starters, I CANNOT live without meat for a single day! I mean I could have it with vegetables, but I need my meat. I do not yet understand the moral aspect of consuming meat. The plants and crops that we feed on are also living beings.

The soybean issue is also bothering me. I do not feel like we should need to choose between animals and trees. Someone obviously needs a kick in the balls. No one should be messing with our rain forests. They are already more than half eliminated… I’m sure there is a more sustainable way to go about growing the damn beans.

I think that before one comments on atheism, particularly in relation to Dawkins, one should read the book.

I have read it and recommend it highly, in addition to Christopher Hitchens’ God is Not Great and Sam Harris’ The End of Faith (as well as Letter to a Christian Nation). I think that I have to agree with your advice to go slow. While the apparent change does happen over night, the foundation for that change was laid over time. In my opinion, things that burn too brightly too quick, burn out. Take time to breathe. Life is huge.

I live in Northern Palm Beach County, Florida, and West Palm Beach participated in PARK day and people were amazed by how their moods were immediately altered by the prospect of sitting on a swath of green in the otherwise dingy downtown area. It’s a great spirit lifter!

What do you mean when you say that you wish change to go ‘slow’? Do you mean a considered, inclusive approach to change rather than the effects of a destructive ‘revolution’? Are there limits to rewards, or are rewards necessarily derived from another’s “punishment”?

The limits to rewards exist. And these rewards are decided by the market. Despite Newman’s Own juice does great things with its profits, the market would not spend $50 for a glass of it.

As for punishment of the adverse industries, its quite simple; either avoid them or reduce your consumption. It’s when the bottom line contracts that people start to sweat and take a good look at where their business is going.

For a revolutionary perspective on Jesus and Christianity, you should read Shane Claiborne’s book The Irresistible Revolution. It’s all about how far modern Christianity has gone from Jesus’ teachings, and how true Christians need to care for the poor and improve the value of community in America. I’m not Christian, but Claiborne’s message of anarchist love through Christ is really inspiring and just plain cool.

I didn’t mean to alienate anyone. As you can see from my previous comment I am supportive of those who take a step in the right direction. Your proposal would be such a step if it could be implemented in a wide spread fashion. Unfortunately, that is highly unlikely considering the massive demand for cheap meat. Oh, and I didn’t mean that all meat lovers are McDiers. Long before I stopped eating meat, I gave up fast food.

If you are eating meat sustainably and humanely then cudos to you. Perhaps, you will show people how to eat meat responsibly and in moderation̷...

Hmm… well I think essentially we agree. You see, my scenario never – ever – included eating anything, from McDonald’s. Because I would like to point out that not all of us who eat meat are guilty of patronizing McDonalds.

Certainly, I agree that that kind of meat consumption is completely unsustainable. I was thinking more along the lines of eat what you, or your neighbour, can grow.

No I am not going to try and flame baste you. I would just like to say that your scenario would work if there weren’t 6 billion McDonald’s loving meat eaters out there. That’s a lot of “free range” animals. I guess it would intorduce a whole new level of urban sprawl, that dedicated to the “local” livestock we would eat. I have been a vegetarian for 2 and half years now and it really isn’t that hard. At first I craved meat but now I don’t even look at the stuff. It’s as if it’s not food! Good luck to anyone who decides to take the step towards becoming a more morally responsible and environmentaly friendly person.

Perhaps this “top ten” list needs to be called “Top Ten Signs of the Irresponsible Borrower.” While I do not deny there are far too many greedy, dishonest and unfair credit companies in all facets of the industry, there are millions of irresponsible people who have not learned “I want” is not the same as “I need” and who do not understand instant gratification without responsible consideration of the consequences land so many in very deep trouble.
