In
considering how we might win improved policies from Apple, we knew one thing
for certain: Apple might tune out Greenpeace, but they would never tune
out their customers. Apple's famously loyal fan base was the one force
on the planet that was guaranteed to get the attention of Apple CEO
Steve Jobs.

So we decided this was to be a very different
Greenpeace campaign, one in which we would turn over the reigns to Apple's
customers. We would stand in the shoes of Apple fans, we would speak as
fellow believers in the wizards of Cupertino, and we'd try to channel
waves of...

Hey there, Jason,
Thanks for the "good luck" and the words of wisdom about the way it all works or doesn't work re: credit...
I have definitely come to the conclusion some time ago that "the only way to win is not to play" when it comes to the Corporate States of America, the credit game, and the Worldwide Debt manifest as trade in human labor. The more barter, trade, and wise communal productivity there is, the better. I choose by and large not to enter into any agreements that make me sign a contract, though some worldly choices allow for that less than others...
The article was wr...

Chris, quite honestly, your response demonstrates, to me, a general misunderstanding of the meaning of community and community-based economics. I’m not creating new content for Rethos.com at this time as I’m going to wait for social networking sites and technology that have community-based decision-making built into them (click here for an example). Due to that and some other initiatives, I’ve been focusing more on the back end of the website and spending much less time that I would like engaged in the community’s activity.

I read an inrteresting article once about a retirement housing building. The owners installed solar. As they expected their electric bills went down. But there was a far more interesting outcome….. Suddenly the recycle bins were filled to over flowing, the water bill went down, and the trash bins were 1/3 as full as before (recycleable items being separated I imagine) and the gas bill for heatinh whent down 50%. No survey was taken as to why everyone became eco-conscience as soon as the solar was up and running but it certainly points to a community effort and simple shame factor ...

New comment - Businesses, Corporations and Companies in the Rethos Community

We recently updated this posting to respond directly to concerns about privacy. The following is the new section we added that addresses concerns raised by Kiadso and Akeeba:

Does Rethos sell its members’ personal information?

A member has recently voiced concerns about Rethos’ privacy policy. We wish to clarify that we do not sell our membership’s personal information and have no intention of ever doing so. We believe that this would be a deeply cynical move, and would totally fly in the face of Rethos’ mission.

Moreover, we have never aske...

New comment - Businesses, Corporations and Companies in the Rethos Community

I agree that privacy and handling of personal information is a major issue that has been raised on this thread. Just today, there was an Associated Press story about Facebook’s “Beacon,” and the controversy surrounding this application’s disclosure of user information.

When I signed up as a rethos member I didn’t give the site any personal information, other than what is on my profile, which is also public and available for anyone to see. I’m not worried about my personal information because I haven’t disclosed any. A web site can&#8217...

New comment - Businesses, Corporations and Companies in the Rethos Community

My problem with Rethos is not that they’re making money. It’s the lack of transparency. I believe it’s perfectly ok to make money, but not by deceiving people. There were lots of questions asked in these threads, only a few of which were answered. One of the most straightforward questions is still unanswered: what exactly is being done with our information? The privacy policy is vague. It’s a fair question that deserves more than a little teasing about possible attendance at a Rainbow Gathering or accusations of distrust.

Thank you Pablo, Alex and Chris. I truly believe this site to have the right idea and from what I can tell, the right people behind it. People who believe a site like this could exist without financial backing live in a dream world. Continue doing what you have to do and I whole-heartedly believe that the people who genuinely want to make a difference in this world will follow.

I’m not a vegan, and I do eat some fish, though I understand how this taxes the environment. So here’s me being hypocritical to some degree and just saying that there is no such thing as sustainable meat, from my point of view. Thought I don’t believe everything he says, I reccommend reading Daniel Quinn. We need to figure out some kind of nouveau agricultural idea, because the way we do it now just isn’t working. One more thing I often consider is how many billion people there are in the world. First world countries eat more meat, because people residing the...

Bottom line is no matter how it is produced meat requires the suffering and killing of a sentient being. Cows, pigs etc have as much emotion and sensation as any house pet. The free-range definition is a deceiving one. many free frange animals are slaughtered in the same facilities used by factory farms, and often the conditions on free range farms, while “cageless” are just as inhumane. Check peta.org for the scoop

Guts,

Nationalism is definitely a contender in terms of bringers of death, and I’m sure religion is very often used as a tool. But the simple fact is that the violence and cruelty of the Abrahamic religions make them particularly useful for those ends. No government has ever used, say Buddhism, as a reason to start a war or to commit genocide. They can’t, because it truly is a religion of peace.

You could certainly make the “tool of nationalism” argument in the case of the crusades or Manifest Destiny, but what about things like witch burnin...

Jason,
Thanks for being an articulate voice for the green movement beyond ideaology! It is true that many grand projects and restructurings need to happen to make a difference, and it is my prayer,as well, that more people come to the place where they feel secure enough to give more of themselves, more time, more energy, more love and more spirit. Include me in that mass of the “they”... so uh, are you ready to come up to Vermont in the spring to help build a yurt? How about three or four?

Very good points! I fully agree. It’s hard enough trying to get people do things differently, or to do anything for that matter. And then to yell at them or give them some kind of attitude, completely alienates them and makes them not feel like doing anything. It’s a turn off. It shuts people’s interest down and destroys the “environmentalist’s” credibility.

It’s all about the approach. People want to know “what’s in it for me?” So we have to go into the conversation with this in mind. We have to let them know that we ...

You’re right Jason, we really need to prove other options work, just as we proved slavery alternatives worked. Slavery, we tend to forget, was the cornerstone of some economies, but on some deeply human level, we felt it was wrong. We are finding that is true about Capitalism as well, ask Keynes himself.
New comment - Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion

Religion prevents critical thought and proper questioning. It favors complete submission to an all powerful authoritarian figure. The reason many people despise religion is probably because it is a fascist concept, one Jesus deliberately tried to oppose, but the powerful had the last word. Now he is the figure to which we submit, and give all our faith. Instead, Jesus argued, we must give all our faith to ourselves, for the kingdom of heaven is within you and around you. “If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you. If you do not bring it forth, what you do ...

”
Diet for a New America” by John Robbins … was that mentioned ? Also, as a veggie I must say one of the things u never want to face as a carnivore is the suffering u cause another sentient being. It honestly & simply takes a certain level of dishonesty & detachment to be a carnivore. If you were truly honest with yourself you could no longer eat meat. I believe it was Shaw who said it best: Until we stop being the graves for dead animals we as a species shall never live in Peace. (major paraphrasing!)

I have read it and recommend it highly, in addition to Christopher Hitchens’ God is Not Great and Sam Harris’ The End of Faith (as well as Letter to a Christian Nation). All of the questions and issues posted in the comments are addressed in these books (less so in Hitchens’ book, which if you had a liberal arts education, this might be the one time it comes in handy. With all of my education, I still had a list of 30 references within the text that I ha...

The following is my opinion, and only my opinion.

Beliefs are widely regarded as a good idea.
Religion is widely regarded as a bad idea.
Religion causes wars, murder, oppression, racism, sexism, homophobia, overpopulation, and all manner of unsavory things.
None of the above has anything to do with the initial post lol

The initial post is about a book. This book uses strong words to efficiently describe the author’s viewpoint on (I’m assuming the Christian version of) God. Those are all words designed to affront, without a doubt. I’m beginning to get the impres...

I live in Northern Palm Beach County, Florida, and West Palm Beach participated in PARK day and people were amazed by how their moods were immediately altered by the prospect of sitting on a swath of green in the otherwise dingy downtown area. It’s a great spirit lifter!

I understand that many (myself included) learned about “Animal Rights” from Peter Singer, but he is a utilitarian and not actually opposed to using animals. If you want to learn about abolition (which is what AR used to be before it was co-opted by animal welfare), read Professor Gary Francione’s work. His website, www.abolitionistapproach.com, has very accessible flash presentations that explain the differences between animal rights and animal welfare, what animal rights actually is (contrary to what PETA might say), and why property rights ar...

It’s nice when people seek to ignite a debate, and one actually ensues, rather than everyone just confirming their original beliefs. I think I’m going to like rethos.

I’m with Krista et al at the moment; I think that what is needed from an ecological perspective is a fundamental change to food culture, but not necessarily one that cuts out meat. It’s similar (but not directly linked) to the kind of change which one has affect in one’s diet when changing to full vegetarianism, engaging in a whole new approach to food, recipes and ingredients rather ...

thank you for posting the info. realizing the effect that our food choices have on the environment is crucial. becoming a vegetarian is one of the easiest things a person can do to decrease the impact they have on the environment as well as decrease the amount of suffering that farm animals are subjected to.
i have been a vegetarian for over four years and really cant imagine eating meet again, but lately i have struggled with whether or not my choices really are the least impactful on the environment. in the january 2007 issue of national geographic there is an article attributing the ...

What do you mean when you say that you wish change to go ‘slow’? Do you mean a considered, inclusive approach to change rather than the effects of a destructive ‘revolution’? If this is the case, I agree with you. However, I firmly believe that when change happens it happens over night (metophorically speaking), both in the individual and societally. Of course, the period before change can take an extremely long time while thoughts, ideas and dreams are still incubating and developing and conflicts and problems are being fully identified and assessed. I guess, as ...

New comment - The Pardox of Capitalism

Are there limits to rewards, or are rewards necessarily derived from another’s “punishment”?

The limits to rewards exist. And these rewards are decided by the market. Despite Newman’s Own juice does great things with its profits, the market would not spend $50 for a glass of it.

As for punishment of the adverse industries, its quite simple; either avoid them or reduce your consumption. It’s when the bottom line contracts that people start to sweat and take a good look at where their business is going.

New comment - Why does Faith Deserve REspect?

For a revolutionary perspective on Jesus and Christianity, you should read Shane Claiborne’s book The Irresistible Revolution. It’s all about how far modern Christianity has gone from Jesus’ teachings, and how true Christians need to care for the poor and improve the value of community in America. I’m not Christian, but Claiborne’s message of anarchist love through Christ is really inspiring and just plain cool.

New comment - The Meat Industry and the Environment

I didn’t mean to alienate anyone. As you can see from my previous comment I am supportive of those who take a step in the right direction. Your proposal would be such a step if it could be implemented in a wide spread fashion. Unfortunately, that is highly unlikely considering the massive demand for cheap meat. Oh, and I didn’t mean that all meat lovers are McDiers. Long before I stopped eating meat, I gave up fast food.

If you are eating meat sustainably and humanely then cudos to you. Perhaps, you will show people how to eat meat responsibly and in moderation&#823...

New comment - The Meat Industry and the Environment

Hmm… well I think essentially we agree. You see, my scenario never – ever – included eating anything, from McDonald’s. Because I would like to point out that not all of us who eat meat are guilty of patronizing McDonalds.

Certainly, I agree that that kind of meat consumption is completely unsustainable. I was thinking more along the lines of eat what you, or your neighbour, can grow.

When I lived in England pretty much all of my friends and neighbours had their own chickens. Even a friend who lived in a terraced house in the middle of the c...

Krista,

No I am not going to try and flame baste you. I would just like to say that your scenario would work if there weren’t 6 billion McDonald’s loving meat eaters out there. That’s a lot of “free range” animals. I guess it would intorduce a whole new level of urban sprawl, that dedicated to the “local” livestock we would eat. Yikes, I can just imagine what north america would look like if we didn’t import our meat from south american nations.

I have been a vegetarian for 2 and half years now and it really isn’t that hard. At first I craved meat but now I don’t even look at the stuff. It’s as if it’s not food! Good luck to anyone who decides to take the step towards becoming a more morally responsible and environmentaly friendly person.

New comment - Top Ten Tricks of the Lending Trade

Perhaps this “top ten” list needs to be called “Top Ten Signs of the Irresponsible Borrower.” While I do not deny there are far too many greedy, dishonest and unfair credit companies in all facets of the industry, there are millions of irresponsible people who have not learned “I want” is not the same as “I need” and who do not understand instant gratification without responsible consideration of the consequences land so many in very deep trouble. This is not a one-sided issue, and it is not one easily changed.
