It's become fashionable to call yourself a compassionate carnivore if you aren't going to stop eating animals and their secretions (milk) and menstrual excretions (eggs), but you don't want to appear barbaric and you want people to know that you don't agree with the atrocities committed in the name of factory farming.

I don't personally know anyone in 2008 who thinks factory farming is anything but cruel. But I do know a lot of people--and I read about similar people every...

Animals and Culture, Part Deux

Part of our culture is the media that confirms the values we're supposed to have. In most of the United States, when we're young, we play with all manner of furry creatures and stuffed animals, and most of us enjoy that experience and feel a kinship with other creatures. At the same time, our parents and the world around us tell us that our instinct of kinship across-the-board is not acceptable, and they begin to whittle away at any connection we naturally experience with other creatures, with the excepti...

The more I go to the beach, check out the everglades, read the news, and reflect on the rising temperatures, the more I realize that we’ve hit the alarm clock of environmental consciousness and slept right through those crucial moments when we should have woken up. Now we find ourselves snapping into awareness, feeling groggy and a little hung over, and running lik...

Through an accident of birth and geography, you grew up with a certain name for your god and certain beliefs about animals. You were taught that some animals are for eating and some are for petting. And yet others are for entertainment. Your beliefs about your god and about animals are similar in that, whether you think of it this way or not, you hold them both sacred.

But what does it mean to hold something sacred? Why do we cling to beliefs and customs? Is there something intri...

Nonviolence: Practical or Practically a Fantasy?

In martial arts circles (particularly Aikido), there is a bit of an ongoing debate about nonviolence, and I can’t make heads or tails of this mess. Opinions on nonviolence in self-defense are of a wide variety.

AN UNPOPULAR VIEW OF SOCIAL CHANGE

Food just might be the most powerful medium of social change, although most people don’t see it that way. In the 20th Century, with the development of concentrated feeding operations (CAFOS, or factory farms) the way human animals thought of nonhuman animals took a bit of a turn. Though we used nonhuman animals for virtually whatever purpose we wanted before then, the Industrial Revolution led to the dominance, control, exploitation, mutilation and slaughter of nonhuman animals as an industry<...

New comment - Abuse Your Friend's Toilets

According to her… she heard the noise but couldnt figure out what it was, to her it sounded like the problem was in the basement. Also she was spending too much time at work to worry about it. It was the toilet at the front of the house on the ground level. It is more outside the house than inside and she almost never used it.

According to the water company she used almost enough water to fill a commercial swimming pool.

New comment - Abuse Your Friend's Toilets

Treehugger.com hates this post I guess, but I still think it is a great hack for most toilets. Thanks for all the positive responses people. I guess I’ll add that if you have a new model toilet that only uses 1 and a half gallons to flush, you should leave the rod alone. It is already low flow, and you may end up having problems getting it all down. Therefore, you may flush twice. That kind of makes the whole hack pointless. My toilet is olive green, aka, old as hell.

If you must play with it… take a screwdriver and adjust the level screw never bend the rod. Due to the pressure of the water on the rod it will slowly rotate and eventually go to a point higher than the original. This can make the toilet run constantly. My brothers ex was hit with a $2000 water bill (over a 3 month period) due to a toilet that kept on running. Other than that it is a great way to save water!

Electricity, atomic energy, bio fuel, hydrogen, peanut oil, and alcohol: what do all of these have in common? The answer is that they have all been considered as a means to power those four-wheeled vessels that we use to go to the store and get our peanut butter and orange juice. All of these fuels have, at one point or another, been considered the future energy of the world, or at least a pleasant alternative to one of the more common types of fuels out there. And yet, for all of our research and development, our cunning and skill, none of these has produced a widespread and useful vehi...

And either you believe in passive resistance or you think that sometimes force of some kind is necessary; sometimes violence is necessary.

This is a great post! The controversy for many individuals over the vegan or vegetarian diet is red hot. I agree with the voice of this article about the mood and tone of moral superiority that infects these populations. I myself decline to state my dietary inclinations in public, as i have witnessed and sometimes participated in the heated debates about who is a “better” or more “disciplined” food consumer.

It’s controversial because most groups that are known for being “animal rights groups” are indeed not. Recently I was privy to a heated discussion over the definition of “vegan.” Person #1 insisted that people who said they were vegan but ate honey were not truly vegans. Person #2 said honey wasn’t such a big deal, that she considered herself to be vegan but occasionally ate foods that contained honey and that she even ate vegetarian cheese that contained casein on rare occasions.

Thinking Critically About Animal Rights: What you need to know, What you need to question (Part 3)

NOW WHAT?
Most people who begin considering why and how we use animals say the same things:
*I never thought of it that way!
*It seems so all-encompassing and overwhelming!
*We’ll never live in a society where animals aren’t treated heinously!
*Abolition will never become a reality!
*What can one person possibly do?

Those are all understandable reactions. Fortunately, there’s plenty that you can do . . .

WHAT YOU CAN DO
It may indeed be true that we will never stop using nonhuman animals. How...

A world that has found it’s way through the fragmented reality in which it currently exists. Imagine a world in which you could easily and readily feel the interconnectedness of all things. Imagine a world where you feel like you are Living.
WHAT?
Living. Hold on. I was just beginning to imagine. Living, what would that be?
I wish that I could answer that question for everyone around me, but alas….. there isn’t an answer that sits well with everyone at every moment.

The instigator of the Sustainability Symbol, Philip McMaster, says there are two types of people on the planet – people who are 1. still part of the PROBLEM (ignorant, delusional, deniers, inconsiderate, irresponsible, self-righteous, self-serving) and people who are 2. part of the SOLUTION (aware, realistic, curious, considerate, responsible and good at risk assessment)

But really, what is it?

The easiest answer is carrying a big sign and marching about. Perhaps, also, it is being involved in an organization that focuses on the problems around you, such as the Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, or any of the multitudes of local action groups. But it seems that I stumbled upon a new (to me) means of getting stuff done. I have dubbed this method “Calling the Cops.” Plea...

I don’t believe it is a good idea to go screwing around with other peoples toilets. Besides, household use accounts for only 15% of water use (agriculture 70%, industrial 15%) so if we get farmers to stop growing rice in the desert (because of access to cheap plentiful water) then we could save more water than messing around with a million friends toilets.

I mean, don’t you think that the people who do reprehensible things (unjust, unsustainable, destructive to the environment) believe they are doing it for the betterment of some higher goal? If I want to go off and dump chemicals in the nearest river, I’m not doing it because I want to kill the fish, I am going it because I want to improve something or other with my product. If I go kill some people in the next village, I am doing it most likely because I think their rights are not a priority whereas “mine” (m...

What is the actual policy on flushing: ‘if it’s yellow let it mellow’ – is this best? Is it best to avoid flushing even in other people’s homes? Obviously it’s not so bad for us guys…
