Heroes of Healing

When I was diagnosed with several dis-eases I was told by doctors I would only get worse, to be on pain pills and life looked grim. Through learning about the mind/body connection I was able to find teachers I resonated with to study so that I could heal myself. Two years later I am healthier than ever. I began to think about how wonderful it would be to have a large resource of inspirational leaders so that people would have one spot to go to -- to view some videos, hear about what others had learned about them and find out more about different modalities to heal...

Credit Card "Insiders" Speak Out About Abusive Practices

Earlier this year, former employees of MBNA and Bank of
America contacted AFFIL looking for a way to speak out about
disturbing sales practices they were trained to use as employees. Their stories confirm what
we've long suspected: that credit card companies extend credit
to those who can't afford it, and engage in a "tricks and traps"
business model designed to max out cardholders and keep
them on a debt treadmill as long as possible. Watch the video
and listen to what Cate Colombo
and Jerry Young have to say.

New comment - Rethos-Inspired Top Ten List of Some of the Best Places to Work

Thanks for the comments. I will definitely look deeper into telecommuting and gender issues more deeply as I prepare the next version of the list - among other important issues.

Just a note that I believe Avaya are inclusive of gender in how they approach diversity.

I also hope to compile a list specifically for non-profits so any input on that would be great.

Hopefully we can force the global work place to be more equitable with a bit of effort!

Good point! We have a long way to go in our society to insure the safety and prosperity of ALL people, and trans folks are often left out of negotiations altogether. Companies that are open and obvious about their support of this underserved community would definitely get MY support.

As a trans-woman who is quite involved with the transgender equality movement, I appreciate this information.

One detail that seemed conspicuous by it's absence was any mention of gender-identity inclusion in these company's diversity policies.

While many businesses now have explicit "sexual orientation" policy, the matter of "gender identity" is completely different, without being mutually exclusive.

Providing this inclusion obviously protects transgender people, but also protects ANYONE, regardless of orientation (that means straight folks too) whose image may be arbitr...

Little do most people know, there was actually an oil company in Calgary that pulled out of Darfur when they could have faced a human rights violation charge for their 'passive' role there. From Calgary to Edmonton, and I'm hearing other cities are doing it as well (also Jewish World Watch is doing one), there's a 'Walk for Darfur' to raise funds and support and awareness- check out www.walkfordarfur.ca for Canadian info, especially if you want to start your own walk!

Excellent article that nails a highly ingrained American trait: the quest for more and more "stuff." It seems to be a byproduct of our economic credo, unlimited growth regardless of the environmental or social consequences. The notion of a steady-state economy (http://www.steadystate.org/) doesn't even seem to register on the national consciousness.

A good resource that openly mocks rampant consumerism is Adbusters: http://www.adbusters.org/home/.

New comment - Drug Abuse

I feel a cool way is to get many people here at rethos to come together and brainstorm ideas on how drug abuse can be stopped. I’ve already contacted e few people (rethos.com/plateglasspoint) for suggestions.

As I stated in my my article, there should be more public awareness like giving information cards on drug abuse in the streets, commercials, or have someone who used to be addicted come to schools to speak to students. Parents need to be aware as well about their kids and what they’re doing. Feel free to contact me if you or someone you know is interested and has any sugg...

New comment - On Revolution: How and Why?

For a long time, I’ve been wondering about how to use my life. I am someone with an enormous amount of opportunity and I believe that I could easily ignore all of the challenges and loss happening in the world today. However, I also believe that you are absolutely, positively right. If we are organized, determined, and do not fear the boss-men, then we shall prevail. Get the message out, reject the damage control brainwashings that the corporations will undoubtably react with, and the noble masses will join us.

Great writing and wonderful ideas! Thanks for sharing them. I don’t know why I didn’t see this article earlier.

“What I’d really like to see is that movement growing and taking things to the next level – setting up credit unions that would provide bridge loans to workers seeking to purchase the businesses where they work and convert them into collectives, providing legal support and know-how to one another, really build it into a movement.”

Thanks for bringing this analogy to light Pablo – it IS a war of sorts – the problem is that it is an unconventional war, where without a clearly identified “Other” (tribe, economic class, ideology etc.)... it becomes a war of hearts and minds between 1.) people who are already part of the solution (like Rethosarians) and 2.) people who are, through ignorance or maybe greed, still part of the problem. ... as we discussed at that Cafe in Westmount a few months ago – “DragonTHINK” and the idea of sharing the simple 3 finger Sustainabiity Symbol is ...

If car manufacturers and oil companies don’t want this to happen. Is good to see companies like Google that use their money to make it by them selves.
