Statement by WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan

We face a severe financial crisis of unprecedented dimensions in a
world that has never before been so closely connected and
interdependent. The consequences are global. The situation is volatile.
The current financial crisis is rapidly becoming an economic crisis and
threatens to become a social crisis in many countries.

The crisis comes at a time when commitment to global health has never
been higher. It comes in the midst of the most ambitious drive in
history to reduce poverty and distribute ...

Environmental Activists Expose Dangers of E-Waste

November 14, 2008, Delhi, India: In the streets of Mustaffabad, a poor
quarter of Delhi, children in sandals sit on top of piles of broken
glass and twisted metal, smashing computer monitors. Men with
blowtorches melt circuit boards, while nearby, women sort and scrub
other boards with diluted acid. Charred fiberglass and copper dust
litter the ground.

This is the world of the electronic waste (e-waste) recyclers, who make
a living by tearing apart the toxic remains of old home computers, cell

war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo.

Amid renewed fighting that has displaced more than 130,000, ongoing

Credit Card "Insiders" Speak Out About Abusive Practices

Earlier this year, former employees of MBNA and Bank of
America contacted AFFIL looking for a way to speak out about
disturbing sales practices they were trained to use as employees. Their stories confirm what
we've long suspected: that credit card companies extend credit
to those who can't afford it, and engage in a "tricks and traps"
business model designed to max out cardholders and keep
them on a debt treadmill as long as possible. Watch the video
and listen to what Cate Colombo
and Jerry Young have to say.

Avoiding College's Plastic Hangover

The immediate gratification of using plastic to buy an
iMac, tickets to a Coldplay concert and nights of bar hopping has a way
of coming back to haunt college students after graduation.

Despite their lack of a credit history and sizable
student loans, most college students can get their hands on credit
cards with as much ease as a swipe. And they're often lured into doing
so with awards like free T-shirts. Along with the freebies, however,
come some not-so-pleasant surprises: high interest rates and a range of
fees and penalties.

but if you’re informed and cautious, you have a better chance of steering clear
of the traps and saving money.

New comment - Urban Harvesting - Collect And Distribute Local Foods

You're right. I ran a project last year in the U.K. in which people grew food in their backyards, schools and hospitals in their front yards and the city authority's environment department grew food in parks. We harvested the final crop and it provided enough food for 2000 people, in an event attended by 8000. The town has a population of 140,000. We grew across over 150 sites. It fed 2000. Sounds like a useful harvest to me! More here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/26/cityfood

It is more outside the house than inside and she almost never used it.

hmm strange. I guess I accidentally created two profiles at some point. Christopher Howse is me. The creator of this post.

About the $2000 dollar water bill… Does that mean he was not home to hear his toilet running for 3 months? I don’t get it. When a toilet is running it is not silent.

Treehugger.com hates this post I guess, but I still think it is a great hack for most toilets. Thanks for all the positive responses people. I guess I’ll add that if you have a new model toilet that only uses 1 and a half gallons to flush, you should leave the rod alone. It is already low flow, and you may end up having problems getting it all down. Therefore, you may flush twice. That kind of makes the whole hack pointless. My toilet is olive green, aka, old as hell.

If you must play with it… take a screwdriver and adjust the level screw never bend the rod. Due to the pressure of the water on the rod it will slowly rotate and eventually go to a point higher than the original. This can make the toilet run constantly. My brothers ex was hit with a $2000 water bill (over a 3 month period) due to a toilet that kept on running. Other than that it is a great way to save water!

The internet is the last true means for expression and free speech. Corporate America knows that, and will do whatever it takes to law down the law (via corporate government lobbyists)

The hole America is falling into in terms of corporate power and influence on government is one that is hard to get out of. Mark my words…it gets worse from here if nothing is done.

Its a common theme for bloodless corporate evil doers to blur the distinction between laws and government. The current regulations which force AT&T to swallow the entire net when passing it on to DSL customers are content neutral and thus if AT&T wants to do business through its phone lines it cannot reach into its network stream and, for example, block Google until it pays a network toll for the privilege. That’s good law and the government that enforces it is good government. That’s law that really says ‘Hands off the internet&#82...

I’d say it’s corporations and the government… The US government uses the internet to infiltrate activist groups, spy on people, etc. But I agree with Alec- AT&T is pulling a bait and switch on us by making it seem like it’s only the government that’s a danger and that corporations are our friend. Same line of poo the media networks feed us about Democrats and Republicans, that they are polar opposites when in fact they are both corporate-funded PR campaigners campaigning for the same exact thing.

Nice Post. I also think their is a problem with ologopolies with pricing scams. I know I am paying like $45 a month for 10m down and 512k up. Yes thats not even 1m up, now those who might care are asking what I need this speed for, but mainly PODCASTS and IPTV. Yes, I want those HDTV quality clips that are gigs in size. I know FiOS is pushing the envelope, before I moved, I had 20 down and 5 up for $39.99!

I found a place doing exactly what you describe. It’s called City Harvest in NYC. See http://cityharvest.org/ If you look at what they accept it is limited but they’ll still receive some prepared foods. A long time ago, I worked at a deli in San Diego and we always brought home the old bake goods and distributed to all my poor college neighbors.

This is a great idea… and it corresponds to one that I wish could have been enacted when I lived in Key West, where the good weather draws many homeless and low-income folks, but where the economy drags on those with no- or <del>limited</del> resources. It seemed such a waste to have three local deli’s and many local restaurants just throw away food every day… pounds and pounds of good healthy meat, produce, and salads! I asked some of these places if they would be willing to distribute some of their leftovers and I was told that it was “illegal” for them ...

But, doesn’t it seem like such a daunting task? In my experience, I’ve always had a hard time getting involved in poverty reduction and equality without addressing the issues that I see locally, everyday , here in Toronto. So, how can all these considerations be reconciled, and translated i...

This is a great article – thanks for it. As the Director of a struggling non-profit, I am often tempted to dream of the great philanthropist who will be inspired by what we are doing and give us a huge endowment to sustain our work into perpetuity! However, your article reminds me of what is important. Essentially our work is about everyday philanthropy and encouraging this in others. The contributions to our work which are most meaningful are the generousity of encounters, the time of volunteers, their commitment to be the best they can be, and the passion of young people. What a great idea…I have never thought about that.
I will now vandalize every toilet I come across!

New comment - The American Political Party System

This is a thoughtful and well-put article about what’s wrong with the American party system. It does seem as though voting within the parties preserves the status quo rather than effecting any actual change. Still, what I’d like to see is the ‘what we can do about it’. I am about to be of voting age and I would like, very much, to vote in such a way as to be able to make change.

(A side-note in response to Akeeba: Stating that America’s system is similar to the one-party system in Communist countries is perfectly alright and not insulting to any ac...

i think this is an issue that many people in other countries with multiple party systems have recognized about the american ‘democratic’ system. hopefully more people will become aware of this ‘two sides of the same coin’ system but will choose to become involved in a solution, rather than remaining indifferent.

Overall, I agree with your idea that the two party system is no good and that it’s actually a one party system in disguise. A common question I ask current politicians is: how are you going to open up the political process to more than just Republicans and Democrats? Many of them fail to answer the question.

The mentioning of communism in relation to political parties isn’t completely accurate because communism is an economic system that can also be democratic. The two party republic of the United States exists within a capitalist economic system, or as some mig...

Very good points! I fully agree. It’s hard enough trying to get people do things differently, or to do anything for that matter. And then to yell at them or give them some kind of attitude, completely alienates them and makes them not feel like doing anything. It’s a turn off. It shuts people’s interest down and destroys the “environmentalist’s” credibility.

It’s all about the approach. People want to know “what’s in it for me?” So we have to go into the conversation with this in mind. We have to let them know that we ...

I don’t believe it is a good idea to go screwing around with other peoples toilets. Besides, household use accounts for only 15% of water use (agriculture 70%, industrial 15%) so if we get farmers to stop growing rice in the desert (because of access to cheap plentiful water) then we could save more water than messing around with a million friends toilets.

The ONE Campaign has started a PR drive that focuses around college campuses. It should be lots of fun. It is kind of a contest to see which school can accumulate the most points by engaging in publicity for the ONE Campaign. The school teams win prizes. The ONE Campaign wins more public visibility.

Great hack! here is something that I found long time ago.

The Aqus system collects the water from a bathroom sink and filters and disinfects it before it gets re-used as flush water for an adjacent toilet. It saves between 10 and 20 gallons of fresh water per day for two person bathrooms with normal activities. This represents between 3,650 and 7,300 gallons of fresh water saved per year. An equal amount of wastewater cost is also saved.” This would mean an annual savings of $40.88 to $81.76 (based on an average rate of $5.60 per 1,000 gallons) from using a device like th...
