Credit Card "Insiders" Speak Out About Abusive Practices

Earlier this year, former employees of MBNA and Bank of
America contacted AFFIL looking for a way to speak out about
disturbing sales practices they were trained to use as employees. Their stories confirm what
we've long suspected: that credit card companies extend credit
to those who can't afford it, and engage in a "tricks and traps"
business model designed to max out cardholders and keep
them on a debt treadmill as long as possible. Watch the video
and listen to what Cate Colombo
and Jerry Young have to say.

They do not want to acknowledge that, perhaps in a
fit of naïve, youthful optimism, they borrowed more than they could
handle.

Then there is Alan Collinge, who for years has

Avoiding College's Plastic Hangover

The immediate gratification of using plastic to buy an
iMac, tickets to a Coldplay concert and nights of bar hopping has a way
of coming back to haunt college students after graduation.

Despite their lack of a credit history and sizable
student loans, most college students can get their hands on credit
cards with as much ease as a swipe. And they're often lured into doing
so with awards like free T-shirts. Along with the freebies, however,
come some not-so-pleasant surprises: high interest rates and a range of
fees and penalties.

New comment! - Biodiesel bus at the Ohio State Green Fair (part 1)

This is a crucial debate and a difficult one to get to the bottom of. Biodiesel is renewable and less poluting in its use, but production is a major issue – particularly where rain forest is cleared for the growing of crops. I run a non-profit in Belfast and we’re about to put a video production vehicle on the road to support teams of young people to do films in their communities. We are currently debating whether to go with a bio-diesel option or a petrol vehicle. I’d like us to get away from the petrol industry (and all its political connotations), but the choice ...

New comment! - Biodiesel bus at the Ohio State Green Fair (part 1)

The link is informative, Sarah, but not directly applicable here.

As the guys mention in their video, they’re running the bus off of vegetable oil discarded from restaurants. Technically it’s not biodiesel, which — as mentioned in your link — is often made from palm oil.

There’s a place for debates over the lobbying role of subsidized United States agribusiness, the environmental effects of spraying and growing enormous crops of inefficient but politically favored corn, and so on.

I’d hate to see anyone walk away from this thread ...

New comment! - Biodiesel bus at the Ohio State Green Fair (part 1)

Biodiesel is part of the solution, but it important to know it’s origins.
Please read the excerpt from an article by KRISTA MAHR/RIAU published in Time Mag below.

....The biodiesel boom has a high environmental cost, however. Critics say it’s contributing to global warming. Tropical forests help remove millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year. Burning and clear-cutting not only eliminates one of the planet’s crucial air-filtration systems, the process also releases even more carbon dioxide into the air, in s...
