Common Credit Card Tricks & Traps

We all know that credit card contracts are
packed with fine print tricks and traps to increase the likelihood of paying
fees and penalties. As part of our
summer focus on credit cards, AFFIL has compiled this list of common tricks and
traps. You will be hard pressed to find
a credit card without these terms – at least until our government outlaws them –
but if you’re informed and cautious, you have a better chance of steering clear
of the traps and saving money.

The sustainable energy summit on Saturday at UMass-Amherst went splendidly! Just about everyone we talked to was enthusiastic about the project, and feel it is about time something like this happened. Everyone is tired of a society that can't get its priorities straight, and are glad to see an organization dedicated to financially empowering communities.

We did a presentation to a group of about ten people and got some important feedback on the project, mostly positive and some constructive. It's interesting how sometimes those who seem like your greatest foes can be your biggest...

New comment! - Urban Harvesting - Collect And Distribute Local Foods

You're right. I ran a project last year in the U.K. in which people grew food in their backyards, schools and hospitals in their front yards and the city authority's environment department grew food in parks. We harvested the final crop and it provided enough food for 2000 people, in an event attended by 8000. The town has a population of 140,000. We grew across over 150 sites. It fed 2000. Sounds like a useful harvest to me! More here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/mar/26/cityfood

Part of our culture is the media that confirms the values we're supposed to have. In most of the United States, when we're young, we play with all manner of furry creatures and stuffed animals, and most of us enjoy that experience and feel a kinship with other creatures. At the same time, our parents and the world around us tell us that our instinct of kinship across-the-board is not acceptable, and they begin to whittle away at any connection we naturally experience with other creatures, with the excepti...

Isn’t it finally time for a compassionate medical marijuana policy? For too long the issue has been held up by cultural prejudices and long held political grudges. It’s the old hippie/square square-off and its time now to get over it and act like adults when it comes to health care. In a country where there are still open wounds over the Civil War, and in a world where millennium-old grudges are still at play in the Middle East and elsewhere, it’s no surprise that irritations over Jane Fonda and burned draft cards still ring loud and clear in our politics today.
Strange Bedfellows or How I stopped worrying and learned to love Wal-Mart (not!)

&l

My hometown has yet to receive a Wal-Mart, so shopping at
one is still kind of exotic to me. I never would have thought I could buy
underwear, motor oil, frozen shrimp and a crossbow all in one place. Brooklyn, far behind on the mega-store
curve but catching up quickly, still has none. In northeastern Pennsylvania, where my folks bought a house
a few years ago, there is the first and only Wal-Mart I have ever visited. </sp...

Shopping = Global Warming

It has only recently become clear to me just how big a problem my shopping habit was. I think I must be have been really stupid, slow, or crazy ......because I didn't get it..... until just 7 years ago. (In spite of the fact that I have complained about the damage to the environment for 20 + years.)

It suddenly dawned on me! .........I am the problem! .............My children are the problem! My nation is the problem! We are the cause and effects of global warming. We are the root of all evil, because we have bought into ( excuse the pun) American consumerism.

Principles of Fair Lending

Reinforcing the regulatory apparatus of the nation’s economy that
has collapsed under this administration is indeed one of the most
important challenges facing us today (“After the Fed,” editorial, Jan.
31).

What won’t work is the typical patchwork approach to
reform predatory lending. If Congress and presidential candidates want
to truly make a difference for borrowers, they need a comprehensive
approach to regulation.

While it did not identify the companies on its dance card, the F.B.I. said they included mortgage brokers, lenders, and the Wall Street banks that packaged and sold the securities. Investigators are looking for accounting fraud and possible insider trading at the companies, an F.B.I. spokesman said.

AN UNPOPULAR VIEW OF SOCIAL CHANGE

Food just might be the most powerful medium of social change, although most people don’t see it that way. In the 20th Century, with the development of concentrated feeding operations (CAFOS, or factory farms) the way human animals thought of nonhuman animals took a bit of a turn. Though we used nonhuman animals for virtually whatever purpose we wanted before then, the Industrial Revolution led to the dominance, control, exploitation, mutilation and slaughter of nonhuman animals as an industry<...

EDITORIAL
After the Fed

Whether or not the Federal Reserve’s recent dramatic interest rate cuts are the right medicine for today’s stalling economy — and the jury is very much out on that — it is clear that the Fed has used up a big chunk of its recession-fighting ammunition in a very short span of time. In just over a week, it has slashed its benchmark interest rate by a total of 1.25 percentage points, to 3 percent. That doesn’t leave a lot of room to cut further without opening the door to a potentially nasty upsurge in pr...

Check out this article from Slate by Nicholas Bagley: Crashing the Subprime Party How the feds stopped the states from averting the lending mess.

’...Some of the biggest players in the secondary mortgage market are national banks, and the states’ efforts to curb predatory lending clashed with the banks’ fervent desire to keep the market in subprime loans rolling. And so the national banks turned to the Treasury Department’s Office of th...

When is enough enough? This is a great article by Adam Doster that sheds some light on the plastic hell Americans are living in. It’s time to start fighting back!

Attack of the $915 billion consumer debt monster
By Adam Doster

Candace Angus is not one to break the rules. When she served on the Chicago police force for 25 years, it was her duty to maintain order. And as a longtime credit card user, she was never late on a payment and never in debt. The topic quickly shifted to cellphones and the big question was – Will advertising work on cellphones? My answer is another question – WHEN will advertising work on cellphones? Certainly the producers and advertisers will find a way. Television was and remains the greatest accomplishment for the advertising industry – in fact it really created the ad in...

Fashion is all about innovation. The history of fashion is the history of change, and over time the cycle has accelerated. Yearly changes have become seasonal and within each season are now three or four deliveries, bringing the impetus for wardrobe renewals to every few weeks. The museum is still pay what you wish, they will still gladly check your coat, and the cafeteria is actually one of the better places of its kind to eat on the Upper East Side. Free, public, uncensored – they must be all these things if they are truly to live up to their promise and their purpose. They are a mark of public trust, in our confidence in ourselves to pursue knowledge and understanding, in our committment to self-determination. I was raised to believe that these were American ideals. That we needn’t fear ourselves, that we needn’t fear our minds being led astray by ideas, that our minds would be led back to themselves, to the best o...

Unnecessary functions: games, pictures, text messages are new ways to parcel out time, new things that need to be checked and checked again. We live in a world of updates.
New comment! - Urban Harvesting - Collect And Distribute Local Foods

I found a place doing exactly what you describe. It’s called City Harvest in NYC. See http://cityharvest.org/ If you look at what they accept it is limited but they’ll still receive some prepared foods. A long time ago, I worked at a deli in San Diego and we always brought home the old bake goods and distributed to all my poor college neighbors.

New comment! - Urban Harvesting - Collect And Distribute Local Foods

This is a great idea… and it corresponds to one that I wish could have been enacted when I lived in Key West, where the good weather draws many homeless and low-income folks, but where the economy drags on those with no- or <del>limited</del> resources. It seemed such a waste to have three local deli’s and many local restaurants just throw away food every day… pounds and pounds of good healthy meat, produce, and salads! I asked some of these places if they would be willing to distribute some of their leftovers and I was told that it was “illegal” for them ...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

My gift to you this season are some of the valuable Sustainability-related domains I’ve collected over the years.

All I ask in return is that you design a really cool site that gets people involved, spreads the Sustainability Symbol around the world and brings attention to at least one of the Climate Change related projects we’re working on (Like “STOP the GLOFs”) The rest will be up to you.

In the new year, our organisation, Public Achievement are moving into new offices in Belfast’s City Centre – actually in the new ‘Cathedral Arts Quarter’ up-and-coming funky part of town. We are moving because our existing building is in a terrible state and the owner won’t get it fixed, but we are excited about the move.

Now what we are getting is just over 1500 square feet divided into two office spaces (600 and 900 square feet). The smaller part will be used as a meeting/workshop/studio space and includes an extremely basic ‘kitchen&#821...

We are in Long Beach California, our organization is providing vertical gardens to the poor that can be placed on a small patio or even a door stoop. The gardens can produce tomatoes, beans, peas, strawberries, and herbs. They take little space and can provide fresh produce for families who live in communities where grocery stores are seldom located close by. By providing neighbors with different plants they are able to share their abundance by swapping pound for pound. The addition of sheets of aluminum and some plastic coverings can also turn these gardens into winter hothouses in som...

I am genuinely enthusiastic about your idea, your purpose. There is too much food going to waste, with too many hungry adults and children in this country going hungry—not to mention the millions of refugees beset by every snare possible…lack of medical care & attention, need for food
products, need for more hands to assist them in rebuilding their homes, their lives. Whether it was an Earthquake, a Wildfire, a Flood, Hurricane, Tornado, Cyclone, or seiges of drought or too much rain. We can learn to work with NATURE in order for all of us to ...

Well, the BC3 has FINALLY been born!
2. ENVIRONMENT

3. ECONOMY

... into the languages of the world, and adapting the different ways of writing to the three fingered hand symbol.

You can see a sample of the Sustainability Symbol in Chinese script on this message.

Your name will be forever associated with the chosen modification of the symbol that represents “Society, Environment, Economy” in your lingui...
