On Anarchism

I received the following email in my box today and figured I’d share it and my response with ya’ll:

Hi,
I tried to contact you on Rethos, but could figure out how.

I wanted to ask you to recommend a few seminal books on anarchy, with which to inform myself.

I will be quite honest, granting my ignorance on the subject, I
nevertheless do not see how the anarchist program is feasible beyond a
small group of like-minded people – communism works excellently in the
monastery or convent, but not so much ...

(Im)migration and Empire

An article I wrote for the CelticAnarchy.org site, I figured I’d re-post it here as well.

One of the big topics nearly everywhere I turn these days is
Immigration – in the US news it’s Latino immigrants from Mexico and
South America, in UK news it’s Islamic immigrants from a range of
countries, and in Irish news it’s Polish immigrants; but in all three
the complaints are the same: there are a lot of them, they’re hard to
understand, they’re different, ...

Lakota Declare Independance from USA

Lakota Declare independence from United States

I first saw this on myspace but wanted to double-check it before posting it here – and I found confirmation here: http://www.republicoflakotah.com/about.html

The Lakota Nation has officially withdrawn from treaties that allowed the United States to annex their land and have declared themselves an independent nation. They are currently seeking international recognition and waiting for an official acknowledgment from the United States federal government.

And, the very best part, they’re completely...

On Revolution: How and Why?

I’ve been thinking on this topic for a long time, close to ten years in fact, and done a lot of reading, a lot of thinking, and a lot of writing on and about it, but until now I’ve never actually laid out my ideas for the real nuts-and-bolts “how” of moving to a post-capitalist economy. This isn’t that complete article, but it’s a start; spurred by a couple posts I saw on here on Rethos ((http://rethos.com/news/view/683-Alternatives-to-capitalism and http://rethos.com/news/view/309-Capitalism-and-Inequality-If-Only-Time-Could-Tell-) ) about the nature of capitalism and inequa...

Ghandi and Anarchism

I’m not a pacifist & haven’t been one for years – as anyone who’s read my other posts can probably guess – but I still find Ghandi interesting. Here’s an article on him and his philosophy in regards to the State, Nationalism, and the use of force that I thought some of the anarcho-pacifist types around here might enjoy.

(hit the link for the article, I’m not going to paste it in to avoid copyright infringement issues).

cheers,

Eggheads - how Bird Brains are Shaking up Science

Just found a fascinating article on avian intelligence and evolution which suggests that many species of birds have very similar types of intelligence to that found in humans and apes, things having to do with grammar, mental projection, and so on. The most interesting part is that it seems to be directly related to how social the species of birds are, implying that perhaps the evolution of intelligence is the direct result of living and cooperating in groups. check it:

The intelligence of birds, which sit far from man on the evolutionary tree, has also forced a reap...

United States of Jesus & Angry Christians

2 videos – “The United States of Jesus”, on religion in America, and “Angry Christians” that i’d like to dedicate to anyone who’s offended by the first video.

I think I’m going to start a new religion and declare Pat Condel its founding prophet, just for the irony of it…. this one goes out to all the christians who got worked up about the Richard Dawkins quotes Nour posted. Get over yourselves people, your mentally ill if you believe a cosmic jewish zombie is going to save your soul; and that’s a fact.

On Nonviolence

Wrote this as a response to another user’s blog, but wanted to post it up here as well.

On nonviolence as the ONLY tool for social change:

This is a very deep debate, one I don’t want to go too deep into, except to say that it’s really not as simple as people who are new to activism often make it out to be.

Historically nonviolent movements that have not been paralleled by a militant movement with broadly similar goals have been remarkably unsuccessful, and they have quite often ended up having their members massac...
