Media's dinosaurial monster

With time, I am getting increasingly intimidated and disturbed by the media around me, especially electronic. Drama, hype, big words, suspense documentaries and dreadful background music. The reporting style is too melodramatic and filmy - almost poking fun at a tragic event or ridiculing a disastrous situation.

I don't know if it is my ultra-sensitivity to unfortunate happenings or keennes to concentrate on remmedial solutions rather than endlessly pondering at an event and the damage caused.

It seems to me too much of the same is being feeded into our minds and hearts. ...

Exercising our franchise

Advanced polling for our federal elections is already underway and it
seems, at least by the polls, that the incumbent government might just
sneak past with a victory. Without taking sides, I think the victory
would probably have more to do with a lack of serious options rather
then the governance of the 'defending champions'.

A Canada Election study indicates that almost the entire decline (~10%)
in voter turnout over the last 15 years is due to the 18-24 age group.
This is unalarming, though, and the trend has been seen in many
countries across the gl...

Positively Negative Syndrome

..Is what a lot
of us experience on a regular basis, especially when it comes to
professional decisions. Personally, it seems to be that the second or
third thoughts regarding a particular decision seem to be negatively
inclined. It is often a case of one foot in the positive and the other
in the negative territory! This slip is called Positively Negative by
the author of the article whose link is attached below. I can partially
relate to that.

Gone are the days of boom?

With three out of five top banks biting the dust, other financial companies being bailed out and much more damage to potentially follow, it seems that the economic booms of the past, such as the one in the 90's, won't be seeing the light of the day again.

The sub-prime fiasco, I think, will pave way to a reduction in consumer spending. If that happens on a large scale, the first casualty will be luxury and semi-luxury goods. Tech companies and Retail giants could face the brunt of the emptier pockets of American taxpayers.

The failure of the economic bailou...

Safe to be unpopular?

Adlai E. Stevenson Jr, (Speech in Detroit, 7 Oct. 1952
US diplomat & Democratic politician, 1900 – 1965) once said:

“My definition of a free society is a society where it is safe to be unpopular.”

What do you think? Is it ‘socially safer’, meaning avoiding criticism and negative attention for the most part, by being unpopular in a developed country as compared to an undeveloped country.

Is it as simple as saying that in a developed society the kind of threats will be more on a social and intellectual level if you say somethi...

Do we accept the status quo?

We live in a world where there is more awareness then ever before about various pressing issues that are not new to the human race: violation of basic human rights, social welfare, the waging of wars, the menace of poverty, economic polarization, sanctity of the law, democratic norms, among many others. It is widely accepted that a common man, from any part of the world, deserves all the basic amenities of life, and has a right to demand them from the State.

How many countries can proudly own to providing its residents or citizens with all of the necessities of life. And if tho...
