My artistic pursuits and passions for social issues have always been inextricably intertwined. While living and performing in New York City, I have taught music and run after-school choirs and a drama club at schools in the Bronx and Brooklyn. I regularly volunteer as a voice teacher and band coach at the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. For many years, I taught theatre, dance and music classes at Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse, a community arts and science center in my hometown of Enid, Oklahoma. Through teaching, I have witnessed firsthand the power of the arts to change the lives of individuals and to develop both urban and rural communities. I am also passionate about women’s issues, having served as part of a rape crisis counseling and victim advocacy group at Wellesley College. I am interested in women’s rights on a global scale, and am passionate about combating atrocities like human trafficking and domestic abuse. Many of my songs address the effects of gender and class roles on self-esteem.
