There are many ways to perceive the world, and one is in terms of action (or reaction). As the Chinese proverb goes, "When the winds of change blow, some build walls and others build windmills." I believe that for a society to healthily function, we must all work together, participate, and build metaphoric windmills. It's not a one-man or one-woman job; we need everyone on board.

I currently work for Mikva Challenge, a nonprofit that works to get Chicago high school students politically and civically active. One of our slogans is "Democracy is a verb!" Although perhaps not grammatically accurate, the statement gets the message across. True democracy requires a broader active and empowered base. If we aim to solve the world's problems, we need the participation of the world.
